Twitter, and Various Others ^ | 4-26-09 | FReepers

Posted on 04/26/2009 8:41:48 AM PDT by BagCamAddict

Please keep chat and one-liners to a minimum. This thread is intended to be a one-stop-shop for all of todays NEWS and info related to the Mexican Swine Flu.

To make it faster for everyone to catch up on the actual NEWS, PLEASE PLEASE minimize chat, jokes, bashing the administration, soapboxes, and so forth. These live threads can become useless monster threads if everyone throws in their one-liners, and we all have 'em! So let's try to keep this thread useful for the latest NEWS.

Thank you all in advance.

I’m chairman of our country board of health. I will post anything I hear/know that is different than what is “out there”. We will likely focus tomorrow on communication with the public and surveillance (i.e., detecting possible cases). At this point prevention will vary among localities. If you have cases, you might close schools, limit public gatherings, and/or quarantine. Social distancing can really help.

Yeah, I know.

Compare this with Katrina, where at most a few hundred were at risk of dying.

If this is the real McCoy like 1918, then millions are at risk of dying.

Fact is, the only time quarantine works is NOW, not a week from now.

They will be roundly condemned for not acting immediately to close the border, not merely issue travel advisories.

Condemned now and forever by history.

If anyone is planning on buying masks, good luck. I drove around LA/Hollywood and everyone was sold out. I finally got the last two boxes at a place in Hollywood.

Thanks for that link. When are they going to actually say, “STAY our of Mexico!”?

“People traveling from the United States to affected areas should be aware of the risk of illness with swine flu and take precautions. People entering the United States who are experiencing symptoms consistent with swine flu and have traveled to an affected area, or have been exposed to someone possibly infected with swine flu, during the last 7 days should report their illnesses to their health care provider immediately and inform them of their recent travel.”

Is there any way to predict how big this will ultimately be or do we have to wait and see?

More time needed for surveillance. This is the end of the typical flu season. No fatalities in U.S. to date. Could be because we have baseline better nutrition and access to health care. Could be the Mexican fatalities have co-morbidities. Chances are good someone somewhere in the U.S. will succumb to this flu and die. When that happens, most important is to learn whether they were already compromised, or otherwise healthy. That will ultimately determine the worry factor. Until then, watch, wait, and practice common sense cleanliness. This is not even close to FUBAR status.

Also would not common sense indicate travel warnings from the state dept. for travel to at least Mexico City if not all of Mexico?

Politics always trumps common sense.

Via KSAT San Antonio: Classes Canceled At SCUCISD This Week Due To Swine Flu. Excerpt:
The Texas Department of State Health Services on Sunday announced that all 14 schools and district facilities in the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District will be closed effective immediately after several more flu-like illnesses have been discovered in the department’s ongoing swine flu investigation.

The closure will be in effect for at least a week.

The announcement comes one day after health officials announced the closure of Steele High School, where two students contracted the disease and a third case was pending.

All extracurricular activities also were cancelled.

“We don’t have lab confirmation for any of the additional flu-like illnesses yet, but we’ve found enough illnesses associated with some of the other schools that we believe it’s prudent to close all of them before classes resume on Monday,” said Sandra Guerra, a DSHS regional director and the public health authority for Guadalupe County.

As stated in another post, we should absolutely expect to see more cases of this swine flu---specifically because health care providers are now looking for it. Lots of other cases may have already occurred, but were diagnosed as unreported "viral illness" rather than confirmed influenza.

I've seen several cases of "viral illness" over the past month complete with muscle aches, some mild shortness of breath or chest tightness, cough and headache. Nothing that wasn't fixed by pushing fluids, treating symptoms, and time. No complications.

The flu shot you got won’t help. Truthfully I’m starting to get some symptoms. I hope it’s all in my head. But being in Houston....

I had some sort of flu a few weeks ago... started in the head and then went to the stomach big time. Eating lots of yoghurt seemed to help clear it up after a week or so.

Imho, this means that the virus will mutate or there could be another virus that emerges at a later date.
