WOW! You are truly out in the stars and reality doesn’t exist in a basis of relativity from your perspective. I make my living here off the sea, on everyday the weather alows me to be out on her on my dear and trusted “DIANA!”
How dare you tell me I do NOT know the sea! Clearrly, you have NEVER been to Sea here in Maine!! Look Blue Hill up on the maps. Since your knowledge is obviously very limited, Blue Hill is on the Eggemogggin Reach and just due South of Southwest Harbor and Mount Desert Isle. Olease dont waste anymore of my time, I will not address you further. I’ll let the Authority’s handle the stinking murderer and wont apologize for my convictions regarding this obvious crime.
Enjoy your “Evil and Vile Oregon Ocean.”

I noticed that, too. He wasn't holding her hand and she was "behind him". That's what doesn't make sense.

Did her family know about the whole thing...know what he looked like, his work record...

I'm not saying the whole scenario is not possible Of course it is....but how many people have drowned right in that area in the last 20 years.

I was standing on the beach in Hawaii about 3-4 feet from the waters edge. Looking out to a relatively calm ocean , when a wave right at the shore suddenly (and I do mean suddenly) sucked back and jumped up higher than my head. I turned to run and it caught me up to my thighs and almost pulled me in. If I had actually been standing in the water I would have been a goner. I am not familiar with the spot where these people were standing.

That's it exactly- it's entirely possible but there are whiffs of things that just don't smell right.

The Peterson scenario was possible, too.

I'm sure this guy looked up stuff on the web for this "romantic" shore. And betting he visited it several times prior.

Remember, she came here on a Fiance visa...

I just don’t see a motive here. Now if it turns out he bought a big life insurance policy on her I would have a different opinion. No evidence of that.

Well, the people who know about these kinds of situations — “know” (for sure...).

Take a look at post #79... Again, you are evidence of how people get caught like that — in that they *still* can’t believe it (until it happens to them or someone else that they know...).

I would say that you don’t know the Oregon Coast as well as you might like to assert to others...

Could be he received money from the family over time. People PAY to get relatives to the USA all the time. Just look at the Mexicans.

Remember, she couldn't get a visitors visa but could get a fiancee visa. That smells like "Pay Me" to sign on the line.

I'm thinking he's a repeater...This one just got a little trickier.

Look into his history before closing the books.

You said — “Hey Star Traveler. YOU are exactly right. My husband and I were almost caught by ‘sneaker’ waves twice. First time, had it not been for good folks screaming at us, we would have been goners. (They were on a cliff, we were on the beach) Managed to race to shore grab some dune grass and hang on.”

Yeah, people just don’t realize the situation. And there’s no rhyme or reason to it — and that’s why they’re called sneaker waves or rogue waves.

And, it’s been shown that rogue waves are much more common on the ocean than scientists (who look into these things) thought, before. It turns out that these rogue waves are big enough, sometimes, to sink big ships. I was watching a TV show about those rogue waves, recently, and they had many stories and some actual videos of it happening (to a ship).

But, what we’re talking about here is something smaller — that isn’t a rogue wave big enough to sink a ship — only about three or four foot higher than the surrounding waves, coming in — all of a sudden (in this news story).

However, from what you’re saying, of your experience, that was definitely more of a “real rogue wave” (or sneaker wave) — more than just three or four feet... That was bigger — and they definitely do hit the Oregon Coast, too. That’s why this kind of stuff is put out on the news a lot and people are constantly warned about it. But, since people don’t see it every time they go to the beach (or even once in ten times), they are lulled into a sense of complacency and may think it won’t happen to them and don’t keep their eyes open and peeled for something like that.

But, even if you keep your eyes open, there are times you just wouldn’t be able to get away and it would get you. I’ve been in situations along the beach where — if a rogue wave came along at that moment — there would have been nothing I could do.

And then you said — “Second time, we had just parked in a parking area. As Mom and I gathered our purses, hubby was facing the rear of the truck to put the leash on our dog in the back seat. I looked up and started yelling “BACK UP! BACK UP! BACK UP!”

He got the truck (Ford F-250) started and backed up but a tad bit late. Water came up over the windshield, logs damaged the bumper and a week later there was still sand IN the truck.”

Yeah, you’ve already had more than your fair share of those waves... LOL..

And yes, that sort of thing happens, as I’ve heard about it constantly from others. Fortunately, I haven’t had it directly happen to me. But, there is always the next time, I guess... :-)

It still wouldn’t stop me from going to the Oregon beach, though. However, right now I would have to travel from Oklahoma to do it... :-)

Look, I’m in north central Florida, was in Gainesville when the guy was killing coeds at UF, once ran a fundraising car wash at the gas station where they caught Ted Bundy, Aileen Wournos did her thing within 20 miles, but you are leaping to the Serial Killer idea based on not much data.

You said — “Could be he received money from the family over time. People PAY to get relatives to the USA all the time. Just look at the Mexicans.”

Naahhh..., that’s not what that guy was doing (according to the details I picked up in the articles). I kinda know about those sorts of things from a guy I knew a number of years back. This “online thing” was what he was doing, too. You’ve got a lot of Filipinas wanting to get over here to the U.S. — but to do so legally.

Apparently, they see getting married to an American guy as a way out for them. Many of them don’t see a very good life for themselves with a guy there. So, they look for American guys. They go online to various websites and set up e-mail conversations and then either get the guy to go over there or they come over here. And from that they finalize getting married. But, that is only so — if — it’s acceptable to both parties. If it’s not, then it just doesn’t go anywhere and nothing happens. The Filipina goes back and starts over again with another American guy.

In the long run, they also hope to start bringing over other family members — legally, of course, and that’s why they do all this (i.e., so they can do it *legally*). They are not generally trying to get in illegally and they will try for years and decades (even) to get other family members into the United States legally.

The guys who do this (i.e., go online with Filipinas) know that Americans are “looked up to” for many of the Filipino people. It goes all the way back to the Spanish American War and the Philippines ending up not under the control of Spain any more. That opened the door to the European powers to “carve up” the Philippines into their “spheres of influence”. And the Americans stepped in and said (basically) “None of that...” and took over the situation. The U.S. guaranteed the Filipino people independence in a relatively quick time and had a “schedule” that they were going to meet. However, the Second World War interfered with that and especially when the Japanese took over the Philippines. And when MacArthur said “I came out of Bataan and I shall return” (and did), that made him a big hero to the Filipino people (and also Americans, in general, to be heros them). That appreciation carries over to the present day, for the most part.

And, it’s out of that cultural attitude that American guys go over there and (they) say “feel like kings” over there. And also, considering that your money goes a lot further in the Philippines than here in the States, it’s another reason that a lot of American guys go over there.

So, no..., the guys wouldn’t be receiving money from the family over there. That’s not the way they do it. The girl is looking for an American guy to get married to — and she’s serious and *will stay married* (again, for the most part) to the guy and be extremely faithful. She’s not looking to get married and get divorced.

The family also knows, that “in time” they will be able to bring over people to the States, as it’s legally possible. And here in the states, those who came over to get married will also associate with other Filipinos and their families, too. I was invited to a few of those “get-togethers” with their families, as that guy (that I was telling you about) invited me to come along. They are very friendly and are a nice people. So, you’re not (generally speaking) going to find them “paying” for someone to get married to their daughters. That’s because there’s enough American guys looking for that very thing — so they don’t have to do that... :-)

Heck..., some of those Filipinas so very much want to come over to the U.S. legally, that you have even medical doctors who want to find an American guy and get married and come over here to the U.S. to live. I remember that one Filipina that this guy had come over to “see how things work out” was a medical doctor, had a good practice in the Philippines. She was willing to take the medical exams here to get to be a doctor here, and, of course, get married to that American guy. As it turned out for that Filipina, it didn’t work out and they eventually parted and I suppose she was looking for another American guy after that (but I don’t know, as I never heard anything about it again).

The Oregon coast is gnarly, I'm told...

Absolutely brutal. Sometimes I'm amazed that I survived to adulthood.

I loved Florida's shoreline...

I remember my first experience in the surf in Florida..."waves" lapping at my ankles. I remember thinking "You call this an ocean?"

If I was a homicide detective in this town, I'd be quietly digging a little deeper into this guy's background and their relationship. Nothing at this point to indicate foul play, but this situation raises eyebrows.

45 and 22? Something’s wrong with that.

I agree, the standard formula is half the mans age plus 7 years.

Yeah! At first I was even disappointed when I moved down to Southern California and saw the "waves" there, which seemed about half as big as what I was used to (occasionally!) body-surfing and goofing-off in, but a LOT LOT warmer. I couldn't believe the surfers there wore wetsuits. (at first ... after a few months, 68 was WAY too chilly for this sissy) I've since seen the Wedge in Newport Beach on a good day and other beaches along the coast enough to know that regular ol' California waves are a whole different scenario than Florida, but then again, my experience of Florida beaches was pretty limited. They've got no rocks and no sand dunes!!! Did that take awhile to get used to??!

Anyway, I had to laugh when my sweetz told me Rush Limbaugh couldn't believe anybody'd be threatened by a three-foot wave. Rush is a midwesterner ... who moved to Florida!
