FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 12

Posted on 08/07/2007 7:33:14 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share, usually about our horses, sometimes about our dogs, gardens and other stuff we do. :~)

I have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will ping everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends.

Hi there tuffy :~)

I’m sure sorry about your George.

We also had to have our bad pony Euthanized, her kidneys failed her, we tried a lot of things to help and they did for a while, but inevitably, her body just quit.

So we’re just down to Bay and Cyn, too many cats and the dogs.

This place is quiet partly because hubby and I started a horse forum, and that’s where I spend a lot of my time. Many from here, like Becky and Frog, are also members there, but I haven’t heard from frog in a long time. She gets blocked at work, so that’s a bummer. Duchess has drifted away, I wish she’d check in. Beaker wrote in a few weeks ago, she’s alright...

Here’s the addy for the forum if you want to check it out!

Oh Hair, I’m so sorry about Pony, I had no idea. How old was she?

George had gotten so old and sick it was sure time to let him go. He was also having kidney issues, he had no teeth to speak of and his health just got too hard for me to manage.

Yes, I would like to check out the other forum! Thanks for the invite...

I understand about George. You managed him well with his Cushings a lot of years!

Our pony was not old, only about 12. It's a mystery why she went into renal failure. Possibilities include that she may have had only one functioning kidney all along (vet only ever found one on the ultrasound), her food may have been too rich for her system (I was feeding one of those high protein ration balancers), we may have accidentally overdosed her on banamine during her colic episode in January, we just really don't know. Renal failure is not common in horses at all. There's a big ole thread over on the forum about what we went through (Pony Update and Diary (kidney disease) - Baywind Farm Horse Forum)

I see you just signed up over there, look forward to talking more with ya and finish catching up and talking about your filly project. :~)

I’m reading through the stuff and watching Pony’s video. Did you bury her on your place? I had George buried at the same place as Tuffy, a pet cemetery.

I’ll get back over there later, I have a million things to do today. Got a kid birthday this weekend to get ready for and I haven’t bought a thing.

I just finished Pony’s video, you sure did a good job.

Hello Tuffy, good to hear from you. Sorry about the pony, but its great that you are going to work with the beautiful paint filly. Your lost of your Tuffy was very hard on you and I am glad to hear you have an interest again. It took me a few years to get over the lost of my Appaloosa gelding before I even thought about getting another one.

In June I did buy a Peruvian gelding and have been camping and trail riding quite a bit. Mostly, haul by myself, but I did meet some people and have someone to ride with now. The kids showed all summer and Alison did very well again.

I signed up at the other thread and do check in over there. It’s really nice, but I miss the daily activity here.

Take care.

Hi guys, it’s good to hear from you, even if it’s such sad news.

Tuffy - I’m so sorry about George. Really glad you still have the black and white - Mina(?) - she’s just so beautiful.

Hair, man I’m sorry about Pony, you guys tried so hard on her. I’m glad she had you, it more than made up for her bad start in life.

Past year here has been kinda hard. We had to put Buddy, Bob’s queensland down, he went totally blind and wasn’t doing well physically or mentally with the blindness.

Then Sonny’s cancer came back with a vengence and we had to put him down - right after that Farah cracked her leg and she had to be put down. Guess you know those two left a huge hole in my heart. I haven’t been out to the barn since.

We still have Prez, Indy, Lace, Friday and CJ - they are all doing fine. And I still have my queensland, Zuni - she is partially blind but it doesn’t seem to bother her at all. Just last week she was moving range cattle out of the way so I could hunt for arrowheads.

Garden grew like gangbusters this year. We are due for a freeze tonight, tomorrow night and Thursday night. I’m hoping covering it partially with tarps will keep my tomatoes and peppers safe.

Hair, I’ll get over to your board here eventually I promise. Talking horses is kind of a bummer for me right now.

MissTargets - Tuffy went to an ApHC show the end of August here in Carson City. Beat the big guys, qualified for the world again, this time hunter in hand. Guess he’s a keeper.

Take care every one.

Hey, tuffy:) It has been along time since anyone posted here. I still come over to FR to read the news everyday, but I don’t post much.

I have gotten rid of all my horses, and am just about to finish up putting in the apartment in town in the office building I own. I sold the house. I love living in town. In fact today I had to give a ride to one of my old neighbors, and on the drive back to town, I was wondering how we made that drive for so many years:).

I was actually thinking of posting here today, on that long drive back to town:)...We are getting close to the two year anniversary of everyone coming to OK. Seems so much longer ago then that to me. It would be fun to do it again.

Thanks for the ping. It would be nice to hear from everyone, wouldn’t it:) I’ve been wondering if Frog is building her house?

Hey Lady, so sorry to hear about Sonny, Farah and the dogs. Tough times for you all. Good news about Tuffy. I would love to see some pictures of him now. Has Janelle done any breeding with him?

My garden was a total waste! Just too cool this year. Tomatoes rotted on the vine for so many. My peppers finally have started to do good. They better hurry. No frost yet, but the weather has cooled alot

It was perfect weather for riding anyways. I went for an overnighter weekend before last. Left on Thursday and came back Sunday. It was the fall ride for a club I belong too. What is great is that you pay a fee and all the meals are provided. DJ and Karaoke on Saturday night. My new horse is doing very well. He doesn't mind where he is in the line, doesn't care if horses get ahead of him and will go out alone. He is so smooth, I don't get sore at all. Only thing is the hills and my knees. lol

I don't bother taking pictures anymore on the rides, since we don't post much here anymore.

I often wonder how everyone is doing. The other board is very nice and interesting, but they all seem like strangers to me. Lots of young people and it is hard to relate to them.

A lot has happened in those two years, Becky. To me it doesn't seem that long ago. It really was nice and so gracious of you to have us there.

I am so glad to hear that you have adjusted to town life and are happy. That's the important part. It just amazes me how you give up the horses, when you worked so hard with the barrel racing and the competitive rides. Our lives do change, don't they.

Where did Harley go?

Wow, the gang’s nearly all here! Maybe we can resurrect this thread. Everyone has had so much happen in their lives, it’s amazing. I want to hear more. I’m fixing to be out the door again, clarinet lessons for my 9th grader but I’ll get back to this later.

Just as a quick update, I’m still having trouble getting back into the horses but I’m trying to force myself. Not sure if it will work or not. I’m so busy with the kids right now and with 2 kids in college, money is tight.

Sure is nice to see everyone here today!!!

It was about this time we all headed to Oklahoma wasn’t it! That was a good time, and yes, we should get together again :~)

Another quick post. Becky, are you working now? I’ve thought about you often and wondered how you were doing. I noticed you have a facebook page.

Duchess, I’m so sorry for all you’ve been through. Everybody seems to have been through the wringer lately. I know it’s hard to come on here and talk about horses but since we have so much catching up to do, horses may be last on the list for awhile.

Anybody know what Cindydawg is up to?

I see CindyDawg on threads here every once in awhile although it's been a long time.

I guess it's been an eventful year for us all. Did I ever tell you Hair, how proud I am of the website you started? It really is great and you have the patience of a saint.

If I can still remember how to do it - here are a couple of pictures of Tuffy at the show. Janelle isn't allowed to show non-pro since she's not sole owner so she has to show against the professionals.

Remember Ghost, Bob's endurance gelding. This is him and the lady who bought him at the show. She is working with him in dressage.

And this is the water hole (spring) I've been off roading to and hunting arrowheads. My son in the picture and the range cattle that Zuni and her momma moved out of our way.

Ran out tonight after work and picked peppers, cucumbers, eggplant, corn, and tomatoes - everything that was close to ripe. It's way to windy (40 mile per hour gusts) to try to cover the garden so I'm just crossing my fingers that the weather report is right and low will only be 38'.

The pictures are gorgeous and I like the size. You can really see the horses.

Anybody ever heard of a store called Sam Moon? They have accessories like jewelry, purses, belts, etc at very good prices and it’s a huge store. I need birthday gifts so I may run over there today. I’ll try very, very hard not to buy anything for myself....

Tuffy looks very good. He has really matured into a beautiful horse. Does she take him to many shows?

Are those range cattle wild? Do you find many arrowheads and do you collect for sale or own use?

That’s the only show Tuffy went to this year. He was bred to two mares this year, learned to rope and hold a cow, a bit of reining - he did okay in that but his heart wasn’t in it.

The cattle are tagged but range cattle, so pretty wild. They seem to be a cross between long horns and the mexican cattle used in rodeos.

Just looking for arrowheads for the fun of it, although it appears to me we have stumbled onto a permenant camp of sorts. We will eventually contact the tribal offices and let them know, it’s a site not known to any of the current indians or University archeaologists.

Thanks for the thoughts Tuffy:). I’m doing OK. Life seems a lot busier here living in town, so that keeps me busy, altho I was telling my kids the other day, I don’t do much:) I use about 1/4 of a tank of gas a week:).

Right now I’ve just been busy hanging around here working on finishing my apartment. Seems like I’m always waiting on someone. Good help is hard to find. I also keep the books for our company, but I’ve always done that. I’m have been learning to measure/bid lots to help Charlie out. Once the apartment is done, I may go to work somewhere, or I am also thinking about buying the flower shop that is in my building. It’s a good established small business, I’ve talked to them, and they would sell it. Seems like a good business that would give me plenty to do, but still leave time for a life. But mostly right now my life still feels like it’s in a holding pattern till I get my home finished.

MT: it surprises me too that I totally lost interest in horses. You’d think that would have been something that would help fill time. But it seems to me that horses became 99% work and 1% fun. A few months ago I was questioning myself if I really wanted to get rid of them, Then I had to haul Harley to the vet for yearly stuff, and while I was hooking up the trailer I knew I wanted to be done with them.

I pretty much just have Harley to a friend of Charlies, to keep from having to winter him. I kept telling everyone to make me an offer, he finally did, his wife is going to run barrels on him, and when/if he ever sells the horse they will split it with me, rather $500 or $5 million:) He went to a good home where he’ll be used and I don’t have the expense anymore so I’m OK with that.

So that’s my life up till now. The plumbers are here now putting in my bathtub, finally. 4 months of bathing in a dish pan sucks:)

When they are done I’ll post some pictures of the place. It looks nothing like it did when you all were here. It’s come out very nice, better then I expected. I’m kind of proud of how pretty it looks now.

I think I’m familiar with that flower shop. That sounds like a great business for you. There is a tiny florist shop in the little town I live in and they do a hopping business.

I would love to see pics of your new dwelling. Icertainly know how you feel about losing interest in horses. Since I’ve narrowed the herd down to such a manageable number, I’m thinking I should narrow it down even more. I could travel a little, my pasture would get a much needed rest and the stress of taking care of so many animals would be lessened.

I did get one new thing to ride: a schwin bike from walmart. I love it. I ride it all over the place, I don’t have to feed it and it hasn’t bucked me off. And it didn’t cost anywhere near what a horse costs. It won’t need the vet or farrier. To top it off, it’s a pretty color. Kind of a soft sea green.

A bike sounds good:) I have one too, but mine is so old and rusted, the hand brakes don’t work well, and it has a tire that needs replacing. I’d like to find just a plain bike like I had as a kid, no gears or hand brakes.

Thank you both:)

I think Susie misses the country. She doesn't get to run loose as much, altho I take her nearly everyday to a bigger park then the one across the street where she gets to run. She is doing OK tho.

The black cat disappeared a few months before I moved. I never found any trace of him. He seemed perfectly healthy, so I suspect something got hold of him.

Did you know about this guy I got about 4 months ago:

Some sad news. We had to have Alison's pony Tubby put down yesterday. On Thursday, she had a lot of discharge coming from her nose and the eye. She only has the one eye and it was completely clouded over and she could not see at all. We gave her shots of penicillin and her temp was only elevated a slight bit.

Friday morning, she had broken out of her stall overnight and when she stood, she would stomp her back legs like she was trying to shake something off. She was not interested in food. We had her tied out on Saturday morning and she ate some grass, but it was really hard for her to walk. We called the vet and he said to continue the penicillin and to give her bute.

By Sunday morning she was down and could not get up. The vet came out and said that she had a heart murmur and the blood was not circulating in her legs. She did not have a fever, but her heart was very weak and her respirations were very rapid. There was not anything we could do for her.

Alison is heartbroken, but I am so glad she took her to the fair this year as a second project and had so much fun with her. She was a great pony and will be missed very much.

This was costume class with Tubby as a spider. They won funnest.

Alison also showed her in cart classes, winning a few ribbons.

Thanks guys.

what an odd collection of symptoms

Yes it certainly was. The vet said the leg stomping was due to her lack of circulation of blood. Sort of like pins and needles when the leg goes to sleep. The heart was just not pumping enough. She would rest, then try and get up, but was not strong enough.

The vet asked about her long, curly hair coat and if she was always like this. I said "Cushings" and he said correct. I suspected she had that before, but without the test, we didn't know for sure. The symptoms were there, drinking and peeing alot, but she never foundered, like alot do. The Cushings would explain why she had a running nose periodically. Her immune system was jeopardized. This last infection really weaken her heart.

The neighbor is coming this afternoon to bury her. My pasture is a pet cemetery. 2 horses, 2 dogs and 2 cats. Alison gathered up some pictures and other items, put them in a box and is going to put it in the grave.

Aw that’s very sweet to bury things with her.

Cushings makes sense. You managed her diet well then, that she never foundered, some of them can founder with a change in the wind even if you manage them completely.

I’m so sorry about Tubby. Please tell Alison for me. It’s heartbreaking for all.

Isn’t that the truth.

I am happy to see that this has been resurrected.....I’ve wondered what everyone was doing.
It’s two years now since we moved to Aiken SC and I have to say that it’s the smartest thing I’ve ever done. We live in an equestrian development where everyone has their horses at home and we tack up and go out our back gate and were on thirty miles of trails......love it.
Waylon has bonded with the new horse Obie and now they are stuck so much together (Obie being the alpha male)that when I take Waylon out alone Obie neighs the whole time...my neighbors tell me they can always tell when I’m out without him.
We got a rescue dog, Hank, and last week a tiny kitten showed up in my barn..I hate it that people just dump their animals, it’s a constant problem here.
I will try to post some new pictures as soon as I figure out how....lol
Miss Targets,we came up to Cleveland for Christmas last year and I forgot I needed boots.....couldn’t get back down south quick enough !!!!
