You could go on YouTube and learn everything you need to, for free.
The Leftists out there removed it because they are leftists, but in reality I’m guessing that there was no need to teach algebra because the students still hadn’t become proficient in simple math — addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. So, it was useless.
Algebra is racist, or something.
When doing math, I like word problems, because every math problem in real life is a word problem. If you think you have the answer, just ‘reverse engineer’ the problem to check your work.
Good one!
If taught well it can help youngsters for the rest of there life.
College education in those days wasn’t that great. I have 1907 organic chem college textbook. 100 pages.
Nowadays knowledge goes through a , PC, and DEI grinder before acceptance. That’s one thing among many things that is dumbing us down.
Ba da bing
Your average college student these days is still grappling with basic algebra.
There are 11 members on the San Francisco city council. If 100% of them are Democrats, how many tons of s*** are on the streets?
That was the year of a new immersive textbook.
No explanations. No helpful guidance.
Just, here is an Algebra problem. And, here is what you do to solve it.
Completely worthless waste of time.
Five years later, I would have exactly the same experience with French One in college.
The entire text book was in French, and the Professor never spoke a word of English in class.
Completely worthless waste of time.
I retired from teaching 11 years ago. At that time about half the students were taking pre algebra or algebra in 8th grade. All were at least introduced to it by the end of the school year. I heard that our local high school offers Geometry to their freshmen, algebra is taken in sophomore and junior year.
Seems to me that keeping kids stupid and unskilled is racist.
The teachers they hired were probably not qualified to teach algebra. Of course they may not have been qualified to teach science, English and history either.
Public schools have stopped teaching almost all the old 3 Rs as academic education has been exposed as egregiously racist. because the minds of black and brown people are unable to process such white concepts.
When I went through school in the 1950s, algebra was a HS freshman subject that most took. After graduating from college, I taught HS math (algebra and pre-calculus) and computer programming (via GE/Dartmouth Timesharing) for 5 years ending in 1970. For that period of time, algebra was still a HS freshman subject.
Having said all this, I actually learned algebra in 8th grade; however, it wasn’t taught. I got a hold of some of my dads’s books and taught myself.
It used to be that two years of college imparted real knowledge.
I am 73 years old and I never used Algebra once.
