... Instead, it’s the country’s western, oil-dependent provinces fueling the breathless talk of secession ...

Oil dependent ???

Funny, I always thought that Western Canada were oil producers.

“Citizens in the Western provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan”

I’m sure Vancouver is included in this.

I’ve read about this. It’s so sad because I see that Canada’s liberalism is at a whole other level, even compared to here...and they got to that point long before we did.

Alberta could then at some point apply for statehood.

That's an option but I think they are talking about an independent state. Frankly given the current stupidity going on in DC and the rest of this country I can think of why anyone would join it.

Well Canada does have regional problems but I think we over state this as West vs East. In BC it is Vancouver Island and downtown Vancouver against the rest of the province. Even Edmonton in Alberta and Winnipeg in Manitoba are left wing strong holds. It is really similar to the USA where it is rural and suburban vs the city. And the reason for the Liberal Party voter efficiency is similar to the Virginia effect. Liberals are moving out of the city into the suburbs - bleeding into the suburbs if you will and turning them into Liberal Party ridings.

I have come across many Albertans on facebook and there are tons of liberals in Calgary. Alberta is maybe equivalent to New Jersey on the conservative scale - the rest of the country even more left wing.

And AB has to look into diversification. If the electric car dream becomes reality what happens to oil?

That should read “oil industry dependent”

How do they make the electricity for the cars? What's at the other end of the wire?

Alberta has plenty of coal, though they are trying not to use it for environmental reasons.

The world isn't going to be able to do without burning oil or coal for years to come, but if when it does, there are still other things you make out of them.

Western Canadians are more like moderate Democrats yes.

Splitting up? Canadians are NOT people of action so it will never happen. We will just take our lumps.

Also, we have imported so many Syrian refugees Sharia law is on its way. Canada as you know it will be gone in 20 years.

So you're saying it would also be good for 'global warming'?...win/win/win!

Yes, and so I wonder I guess what does the US do - burn natural gas is my guess. And China will be using coal for decades to come I am sure.

The perverse result of electric vehicles in my wildest guesses is that less demand for oil will push its price down, making gas even cheaper. So there will be this ongoing interplay between gas vehicles and electric vehicles. Some 90 year old lady who drives once a week will have next to no incentive to buy an electric car. Long distance commuters will have the most incentive.

British Columbia could go alone, very liberal like our northwest but the prairie provinces need a connection and would make great states, bringing their resources and getting American style freedoms.
