For issues like telementary and Cortana, these can be dealt with among the over 200 tweaks available in the safe freeware Ultimate Windows Tweaker 4 for Windows 10. https://www.thewindowsclub.com/list-of-tweaks-available-in-uwt4

Over my head. What is that, and how can it help me with my problem?

I bought a laptop last year and insisted they install Windows 7. It works like a dream and I don’t do any updates.

What was the error message? Did you go to event logs?

There appear to be hundreds of error messages in my event log. Which one should I be looking at?

Edition: Windows 10 Home Version: 1809

Why not uninstall 1809 How to uninstall Windows 10 version 1809 (October 2018 ... and see if all is well then, and then try to resume updates?

You can delay (recommended) or turn them off if desired, but not recommended.

I don’t know why that message tells you that I’ve done a roll-back. Every time I’ve tried, the computer has crashed while in progress of rolling back to an earlier restore point.

...sorry to hear Windflier has the big C. May you find the grace of God in Christ to handle this trials, and come out of it blessed.

Thank you.

I'm house-bound, and the internet is my only communication line to the outside world. Now that it's barely working, it's like my life is doubly sick.

I read somewhere that after that last update, cortana is taking up to 40% of your computer’s resources.

Yes, I saw that too, and checked my task manager to see how much of my CPU was being eaten by Cortana, and it's zero.

One thing to try is actually upgrading to the latest and greatest version of windows10.

Does the upgrade cost money?

Here is the ZDNet article on the 1809 recall.

Thanks. That article is over a year old. My computer (with Windows 10 build 1809) is only about a month old.

I suspect that MS worked out the bugs to their satisfaction, but missed something, because it's still crashing, etc.

Try setting up a new partition on your hard drive and run Windows 7 until they fix 10.

You probably missed the part where I said I'm a simple computer user who is house-bound with cancer.

Thanks, but that's over my head.

Your windows version should be 1903.
My guess is that your computer is in the process of trying to download updates, which might be slowing it down. You can go to settings and try putting it on a metered connection to see if that helps.

You can also go to hp website and scan your computer to see if your bios and all drivers are up to date.

Component Services is an MMC snap-in to configure COM components, COM+ applications, and more. Run comexp.msc

Daniel, please. I've tried to explain that I'm a simple computer USER - not a geek or technician. I have no earthly idea what that reply is about, or how to execute it.

I probably need to hire a mobile computer geek to help me.

I can’t believe I’m saying this but it may be time for you to try the Linux operating system to see if your problem if an OS related problem or a HP Laptop hardware problem.

There are windows friendly versions that can run from a USB drive. One of the Linux gurus here can probably lead you through it.

Microsoft is killing themselves with trying to come up with a all encompassing operating system.

Me, I’m sticking with my Windows 7 until they pry it from my cold dead hands. Too bad that’s not an option for you.

Good luck.

I have 1903 also. No problems whatsoever with the upgrade.

As usual, I did have a very sluggish computer while it was downloading the update (wish it would tell you when it is happening), but all works well.

The only problems I have ever had with Win10 updates is I often have to reset my modem/router but after the first time I just do that automatically.

Only browser I cannot use is IE. It broke when my laptop upgraded to 8.1 from 8.0 and has stayed broken through all of the Win 10 updates. I use chrome.

"the latest and greatest version of windows10" refers to the latest update, which you do not have, or Windows 10 pro, which costs more but is not necessary. .

You do not have the latest update, and are stuck with a selectively problematic one. So back to my O.P., have you tried to do a system restore in safe mode? ? And or the other options?

Windows 10 REALLY SUCKS!

I avoid it as nuuch as I can. But for the past few days I’m at a motel and wanted to use their computer to print something out. I couldn’t figure out the Windows 10 login interface to complete the guest logon so the girl behind the desk said she would help me. In a way she did because she clicked on some lttle icon to bring up a login screen but she couldn’t make it work and gave up. I persisted and somehow got past the login process without entering the passcode I was given.

But the printer was out of toner! I can’t blame that on Bill Gates though.)

This latest update cycle appears to be particularly heavy duty.
