Abolish the Senate and Electoral College? Why Not Tear Up the Constitution?

Former Congressman John Dingell, Jr., a partisan Democrat whose immediate family has controlled the same seat in the House of Representatives for 86 years, has some suggestions for fixing Congress. We should abolish the Senate and the Electoral College because they're undemocratic, "despite the constitutional hurdles of doing so." In 2015, Dingell retired from the U.S. House seat he's held since 1955, the seat he inherited from his father, John Dingell, Sr., who first won it in 1932. The seat has passed to John Jr.'s much-younger wife, Rep. Debbie Dingell, who was just re-elected in November. (Full disclosure: For 20 years, my wife and I have lived in Dearborn, Michigan, which is inside the Dingell fiefdom and looks as though it may be in perpetuity.)

What’s the saying—history never repeats itself, but it sometimes rhymes? Our founders modeled our government after the Roman Republic. When the Republic started to collapse, various leaders tried to stop the fall—Julius Caesar taking up the task. His nephew, Augustus kept telling people he was restoring the Republic but when he died, Rome fell into the hands of his crazy relatives, Tiberius, Gaius—better known as Caligula and Nero. After them, the hope of a rebirth of the Republic was lost forever. I’d rather not go down that road.

You mean you are a disillusioned voter, still butthurt with Cankles defeat. No conservative would have voted for any of your trash list.

Thank God for the electoral college. Thank God for the orange man.

Yes ... A few people voted for Nader ... enough, perhaps to put GW Bush in the White House instead of Al Gore. More than a few voted for Perot ... enough, probably, to put Bill Clinton in the White House instead of GHW Bush.

Don’t forget George Wallace, who carried five states and earned forty-something electoral votes ... but was still irrelevant to the outcome.

Still don’t see how abolishing the EC would help the next Wallace, Perot, Nader.

Not saying it doesn’t ... just don’t see it. Hope you can help me understand.

Only democrats want the EC abolished. Think President Cankles. And think about President DeBlasio or President Ocasio-Cortez in 2024.

Only democrats want the EC abolished.

I see the EC as one of our defenses against tyranny. OTOH, I see the two party system in its current form as a force for tyranny.

I'm willing to listen to the guy's argument. In the end I may reject it, but at least I'll know what I'm rejecting.

The Republican Party has been partially swamp-drained. Ryan, Flake, Corker so far, thanks to Trump. I’d like to see at least a dozen more by the end of Trump’s second term. Be patient. Be independent. Never cast a ballot that benefits the commiecrat party.

The Electoral College issue is not negotiable. Again, we don’t want President DeBlasio or President Ocasio-Cortez. The commiecrat party is all in for converting the USA to a socialist/fascist state. All the free stuff they are promising their deadbeat-laden base will get them the popular vote. The ratio of deadbeats to good people has crossed one and it’s going to get worse with our open borders.
