I love the Deuce! I drove one in Germany pulling an MKT and hauling trash LOL for a while.
Truck stops are full with detouring truckers finding I-80 is about the only east/west route available through eastern Nebraska right now. Union Pacific and BNSF main lines both impacted, so theres going to be some significant economic impacts. High and dry where Im located.
This is an awful situation. If you hope for warm weather the runoff gets worse but everyone needs to realize the water right now is freezing cold. Wadding out is life threatening. These people didnt build their homes on a river bank, the river came to them. The thing that pisses me off is the media ignores these great Americans. They need our help and prayers.
I’m in central Iowa & am so very sad for you. There is the devastating loss of property of course...but also...the livestock. The farmers & ranchers care so much for their animals...and it is “baby” season.
I watched many videos of livestock rescues today & they made me cry. Cattle stuck in mud nearly up to their shoulders; babies frozen to the ground; horses standing trying to keep their heads above water. The financial loss will be incredible.
And we must be traveling in a parallel universe, as May 17 is going to happen on a Friday.
Do you have any news/source for Carter Lake area?
“I love the Deuce! I drove one in Germany pulling an MKT and hauling trash LOL for a while.”
Not it’s first rescue mission I’d bet. An American icon.
To be fair, if one types “flood” into at least a couple of the major search engines, the 1st prompt that comes up (at least for me) is “Flooding in Nebraska”. The top several results for me, just now, in order, on Google for example, are: CNN, CNN, Reuters, Axios, NY Times, Accuweather, “9news.com”, TWC (weather.com), TWC, “Splinternews.com” (whoever that is), NBC, USA Today, USA Today... and after that it’s all over the place.
Our local TV news outlets, several hundred miles away, have had fairly extensive coverage — granted flooding is a problem in this area most springs and some falls, so we may be “sensitive to the subject”. At least one major National news outlet had a story of a couple minutes or more, last night (not sure which, as I was taking care of a minor “dang it!” here, so I was running about not paying close attn. to what my wife had on the TV, but it was an OTA station during the usual Sunday evening national news broadcast slot.)
Now, I can agree there should be a lot more, and in depth(!), coverage by the national media, given the scope, impact, and what will be ongoing impacts of this disaster. But, I don’t think it is being entirely ignored, either.
(National coverage can be a double edge sword: Back in our 2011 flood event, blowing up the Birds Point Levee was NOT all about saving Cairo, and it was NOT about the white redneck farmers vs. the “po’ blacks” — not even close!! But, only a minority of local news outlets got the story right...)
Shoot, this story is not even staying “up” on the sidebar on FR, and a lot of lesser stories stick there like cyanoacrylate on skin. :-(
Maybe Pres. Trump can get more visibly involved, which should help on several levels.
P.S. Post some links, please!
How the heck did I end up with “uent” as a tagline? Changing now.....
Yes, I have been on the verge of tears all weekend. Some amazing volunteer pilots have been flying in and out of Millard Airport all weekend, taking people and supplies back and forth to Fremont. Sounds like HyVee is donating some stuff, and Salvation Army has a collection center at the old Canfields.
It is so upsetting; makes the massive pot holes problem seem like nothing. It is not even 100% clear in the local coverage as to whether all these communities are wiped out or just inaccessible: Waterloo, Wahoo, North Bend area, Ashland.
They announced this morning that Lincoln has a mandatory order to cut water usage by 50% for consumers, due to concern that their water well fields are being compromised. Everyone had to evacuate Pacific Junction, IA last night.
It makes one feel so helpless.
Post the links. We know how to click on them.
I realize I cant post the links I wanted to do because they are shared on Facebook. So I cant get a link. I really would like you all to see some of this. Others are on Twitter but even there Im not seeing what my friends from Nebraska are posting on FB.
Yes its all surreal. I had heard about the water restriction in Lincoln last night from my mother and sister who live there. It was 25% then so I wasnt aware it had changed to 50%.
They said only indoor water use, no washing cars, but also delay laundry. No water served in restaurants unless requested. They are saying the water is safe but I know its a concern that it is.
I saw about two minutes on ABC last night. Remember the flooding in Houston? Wall to wall on TV. Thats what Im talking about. They really dont care about Nebraskans.
Thank you for your concern. I saw some of those same things with animals. I could hardly stand to think of all the livestock standing on those little islands created by floods, stranded in the dark of night once again wondering what was happening to them.
Ive seen people being rescued, sometimes with their pets, being pulled chest deep in filthy flood water with stunned looks on their faces while they leave whats left of their home.
Thank you for your post. I completely concur.
I have not heard about Carter Lake but Ive asked my friend and when she answers me Ill post back to you.
Yes, on the 10 pm news, they said Lincoln was to have a 25% “voluntary” reduction in household water use, then on the radio this morning, I heard it was changed to a 50% mandatory. It sounds rather ominous, and hope that it is just a precaution.
