Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.) was blasted on social media for comments he made about Canada being more American than the United States was.
Booker was speaking to students at Allen University in South Carolina to help get out the vote for Democrats ahead of the midterm elections. He said that other countries, including Canada, were “out-Americaning” the U.S. by providing cheaper college opportunities.
“Other people talking about college debt, you’ve got to be kidding me,” Booker said.
“Every country we are competing with is driving down the cost of college,” Booker claimed. “Germany – it cost between zero and four percent of median income to go to college. Canada – I can’t stand how they’re out-Americaning us in Canada.”
“Trudeau, give me a break,” he added, “it costs about six to seven percent median income to go to college.”
“What does it cost in America?” he asked rhetorically. “Fifty-two percent of median income and why are other nations out-Americaning us?”
“Why are they out-investing in infrastructure the way we used to?” he asked. “Why are they investing in research and development the way we used to? Why are they investing in education the way we used to?”
“Why are they doing universal paid pre-school and we’re not?” he continued. “Why are they doing paid family leave and we’re not?”
“Because this is what builds a great economy for everyone – they’re trying to beat us to the future when we used to lead in America.”

Many on social media disagreed with Booker’s assessment of American exceptionalism.
“America was founded upon freedom. Not free college,” responded former Congressman Joe Walsh. “Somebody tell [Cory Booker].”
