Dick’s Sporting Goods Sales Sink After New Gun Policy
National Review ^ | 3-22-2018 | Mairead McArdle

Dick’s Sporting Goods has suffered a surprisingly steep downturn in sales since promising to sell fewer guns, but the problem isn’t the gun sales, Fortune says.

Stock tumbled to the lowest in four months after the sports store banned assault-style weapons from its Field & Stream stores and raised the minimum age for a customer to buy a firearm from 18 to 21.

However, the store has also suffered problems with overstocking and high discounts, as well as increased competition from places like Nike and Amazon.

After the Parkland school shooting last month that killed 17, Dick’s executives were aghast to learn that the young gunman had bought one of his many guns from them, though not the one he used in the shooting.

As a sign of solidarity with the student protesters calling for gun control laws, Dick’s announced it would no longer sell assault-style firearms and high-capacity magazines.

The athletic gear company instituted a similar ban after the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting but rescinded it a few months later and returned to selling assault weapons. This time the ban is permanent, Dick’s says.

They sell bicycles don't they?
Some 800 people per year are killed in bicycle accidents.
Where is the outrage?

Bingo... sales will fall across their product line and they will still be unable to explain the loss...

They built a new store down the street from me...but I go to Academy because so far they haven’t been stupid enough to mix their politics with their customers.

I will never go to Dick’s or Outdoor World due to their insistence on pushing their leftist agenda... why give money to these leftists who then turn around and donate to the Dems?

We used to have a small sporting goods chain here in SoCal named Chicks.

I shopped there occasionally until Chicks was bought by Dicks.

“surprisingly steep downturn”

Only to idiots and leftist ideologues is this a surprise.

Maybe not, but people will boycott even if they are not buying a gun.

The majority of their customer must be sportsman who use guns. And they want to pander to liberals who don’t ‘even shop there. What would think was going to happen.

It is a free market system. Consumers can use any method to select optional merchandise.

It also depends on type of salesman attitude. I bought a lot of golf clubs from Golfsmith store in Portland, OR because their sales staff was more friendly and they had a 90 day return policy. Can’t get that on internet sales.

I prefer older golf sticks because the newer irons are too light. Now as a bogey shooter, I want accuracy and fewer bad shots than aiming for maximum distance. I have spent a small fortune on lead tapes over 55 years of golfing.

Yes, we are evolving weaker hand grip strength. That means less golf, canoeing and mountain climbing.

But gun gripping is fighting back on the trend.

I have bought, at least, 20 pairs of athletic shoes at Dicks. Also, some sporting things like a kayak, etc.

No more.

Only a surprise to liberals who are totally out of touch with mainstream America.

I go to Dick’s and fill a cart up before asking a salesman where the 30 round AR mags are. Then I leave the cart and walk out.

Oh my! I wish I could think of a more direct but equally clear way of communicating that message to the culprits at the top who are to blame for this disgusting and insulting new Dick policy. But as I can’t , I have to say Congratukations on finding a way to let the company know just how revolting we customers feel about his they’re treating us. Thanks! And we’re thankful there are so many other better options than continuing to patronize The Dick.
