American Pie.
Sorry, first time seeing this thread. Had no idea folks had already voted these two songs their favorites. Both would be well down my list of top 70s songs, particularly Staying Alive. Loved the early Bee Gees, though. ie, Massachusetts, Gotta Get a Message to You, To Love Somebody.
3 1972 American Pie Don McLean
Wouldn’t be my first pick, but of the two remaining choices, this is the one I pick.
It feels a lot like a general election where my favorite candidate lost in the primary.
Neither would be on my top 100, or perhaps even my top 1,000, but I’ll pick “Stayin’ Alive.”

Same here. If this is what is left of the original list, no wonder I was listening to classical music all during that time.
Cannot stand either song, but that is me.
American Pie.
And thanks for doing this.
Both of those songs are auditory torture and I would break my radio rather than listen to either of them. I can’t in good conscious vote for either one.
And that would be "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees.
The Bee Gees just oozed the 1970s. They had the 1970s coming out of every pore on their bodies. Which is why when 1980 rolled around, the hits pretty much stopped.
Plus, other than the 1972-74 period, the Bee Gees had U.S. top 10 hits in every year of the 1970s. By 1978, you could not listen to Top 40 radio for even an hour without hearing at least one song either sung by the Bee Gees or written by the Bee Gees.
1970 Ball of Confusion--The Temptations
1971 Monika--Ulli Martin
1972 Don't Let Him Touch You--The Angelettes
1973 Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy--The Andrews Sisters
1974 Rock Your Baby--George McCrae
1975 Convoy--C.W. McCall
1976 Whispering--Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band
1977 Freeze a Yankee--The Folkel Minority
1978 You Needed Me--Anne Murray
1979 Sunset People--Donna Summer
Stayin’ Alive.
I got here late! I would have nominated every song from Yes’ “The Yes Album,” “Close to the Edge,” and “Fragile!” And close runners up “Selling England By the Pound” and “Foxtrot” by Genesis, and ... Oh, there’s just too many!
Let’s just say every song on every 1970s album by Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Rush, Gentle Giant, and The Band. And I’m sure there are a bunch I can’t think of, but those are the ones I listen to most often! :-)

I find it hard to believe that the 70s list would not include Karen and Richard Carpenter....
Me too
Stayin’ Alive.
