6.5 Creedmoor vs .308 Winchester as a SHTF Cartridge
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 12/15/2017 | J Hines

Posted on 12/15/2017 5:37:54 AM PST by w1n1

Many have hunters, survivalist have talked about why some people would pick 223 and why some would pick .308 for their specific situation for a Shit-hit-the-fan primary rifle.

Well the 6.5 Creedmoor you would pick for the same reasons you would pick the .308. They would fill the same niche. You want a full-powered rifle round. Alright, full-powered rifle round. Obviously knowing it’s going to be heavier, more expensive, all of that. You’re going to be carrying less ammo if you have to go on foot.

the 6.5 Creedmoor is becoming a very very popular alternative to the .308 in a number of different areas. A number of areas in hunting and precision shooting long distance. We need to understand those differences though between these cartridges when we talk about why someone might want to think about placing something as versatile as the .308, and I’ll let you guys decide for yourself what you want to do personally.

Let’s discuss the facts
As a hunting cartridge, they’re completely equal. Don’t let anyone convince you that there’s a significant difference between them. .308’s going to be a little heavier, 6.5 Creedmoor is going to be a lighter bullet. Smaller starting diameter, the better sectional density. Pretty similar energy with the energy going slightly in favor of the .308 due to the bullet weights, but that sectional density is very important for penetration. So I think honestly using similar shot placements, similar bullet styles, you’re going to see very similar -if not virtually identical- wound tracks through an animal.

Target shooting, the 6.5 is becoming more popular, it’s replacing the .308, when it comes to purely punching paper out at long distance.
If your goal is ballistics, you don’t care about money spent, you care about producing the most accurate round you can make to hit targets out at around 800, 900, 1000 yards. You’re going to -in the hands of a similar skilled shooter, the same shooter you’re going to be more consistent with the 6.5.
It’s better. And I hate to say that about my .308 because I love my .308. So how does that translate to the real world? Well, that does matter for shit-hit-the-fan, because if you are going to take shots out at that distance, the 6.5 is gonna be better, it’s gonna be more consistent.
And you start talking about Shit Hit the Fan, if you really need the shots that long -and I can assure you guys at any ROL scenario, the odds that most of you are ever, ever gonna be in a situation where you need to make an 800-1000 yard shot probably wouldn’t happen even if we do have a Shit Hit The Fan scenario. Which one is stockpiled by the millions in thousands of warehouses and millions of homes? Case closed. For me.

Exactly. Lake City for the win.

Oh, an FWIW, since I follow you on Twitter and FB and I bought(yes, paid for, not on the giveaways) all your books, I wanted to suggest something to you...if you're getting auto-throttled on posts with key words those Silicone Valley lefty fascists don't like...screen shot what you want to say and post the screen shot. They aren't OCR-ing pictures for filtration, yet anyway as far as I can tell.

they are trying to sell guns and magazines. As in there was never a great gun made until this one came along.

Bullets, bullets, bullets. Try the 7MM08 if you want to drop down a bit. If you are a reloader you will already know that there are a ton of 7MM bullets out there but damn few 6.5’s to chose from.

For all of you who just have to jump at the newest shinny thing, go for it but for me I’ll stick with cartridges I can find easily or find the components for easily and in large variety.

I helped a man move his arsenal of ammo one time. It was a teachable moment.

Indeed. I have acquaintances who absolutely refuse to come to terms with the "logistics nightmare" of their firearms/ammunition. These guys have put considerable thought into what they are doing from all sorts of angles, but how they intend to haul so much stuff for even a short distance is not really clear.

Unless they "fort up," they are screwed... and a couple of them dwell in what would make mighty bad "forts."

“The 5.56/.223 is a sucky round ... so we are told.“

The cartridge is fine. It’s the bullet that sucks. Green tip punches neat little holes in things. Push a 62 grain HP or SP at 2,900 fps and the results in soft tissue are quite different.

I have a couple thousand Lake City milsurp that’s fine for punching holes in paper. But for social work I crank out my own with a premium bullet.

I grew up in mid florida, and hunted in what used to be woods and cattle country between Osprey and Arcadia. Originally a single shot 20g then I finally got a bolt action, a Remington 788 carbine in .308 . Since most of the hunting was for hogs with fairly short sight distances in palmetto scrub country, I used 220 grain bullets which just punched through the brush. I always kept a few 150 grain rounds in my pocket in case I got a shot across a cow pasture. ( nice thing about a bolt action, it’s easy to swap out a round). The good old days, when you could just walk into the woods and not even hear another shot all day. Unlike the constant powpowpow today.

When I was around 18, one day I hunted way into the Eglin AFB reservation. I had started on the edge and got really into some deep original growth woods.

I was propped up against a tree and the thought came to me that I might be the only person to ever be at that location.

Then as I was looking around, I happened to notice and empty cigarette pack on the ground.

Given a choice, I’d take a 20 gauge single shot shotgun with an assortment of inserts over a rifle that fires the 6.5 mm Creedmore or .308 round. With the former, hunting would be far more efficent as I’d be able to take birds, squirrels, rabbit and even deer. Add a lightweight collapsible fishing rod and some fishing gear and the odds of me returning with food are greatly increased over me carrying a rifle chambered for a 6.5mm or .308 round.

oh noes...

That’s only one way to make up for that mistake...well two ways.

But another gun AND buy another gun.

Gettin’ crowded in the old gun locker.

I used to reload but haven’t done so since maybe the early 90s. I used to buy my components at the nearest large gun shop.

There was always a plentiful supply of .264 bullets ranging from 100 to 160 grains. I imagine there are even more plentiful now.

SHTF this big guy...

None of your ammo, body armor, bunkers, or guns will save you from what really is coming.

Dumbest discussion EVER. Ina SHTF situation, where you may need to scrounge ammo, you can find .308, 6.5 Cree will be rare as finding a hen’s tooth.

Agree! JUST got a new M1A and hated adding another caliber to the inventory...but that thing shoots so smoothly!

Plus, I may dabble in reloading .308 too...

The 6.5 will be a special long range piece, the 5.56 and 7.62x39 would be my main pieces, along with .22lr

Travis, that is the exact first thought that popped into my head. I don’t recall ever seeing the other one.

Where I live, the only question is: Will it reliably take down an Alaskan coastal brownie with one shot? If not, you need something bigger. I consider a .308 the minimum, prefer a .30-’06 and, truth be told, a 12 gage pump would be a better, more versatile survival weapon. If I lived in the lower 48, I would choose an AR15 in .223 (For ammo availability) since the biggest thing you would be likely to shoot would be a human and they tend to run in packs.

I’ve read that those who live in Grizzly country would choose the Winchester Model 71 in .348win if they could only carry one weapon. Unfortunately since these became collector items the ammunition is no longer manufactured by Winchester.

Exactly. It’s not about what you have in the basement or garage. It’s what you can carry on foot that counts. Try loading up with basic survival gear including three days rations and water plus a rifle and just 60 rounds of .308 in loaded magazines and see how far you can walk in a morning. (Don’t over do it)

When I was 18 it was hard and I was grateful when I was given the little plastic rifle. Sure, it would break in half if you tried a butt stroke with it or used the stock to break your fall like they taught you with the M14, but you could carry 20 loaded magazines easily and the rifle felt light as a feather...at first.

If I lived in areas with Brown bears or Grizzlies, I would never go in the woods without at least a Ruger Super Blackhawk loaded with hard cast Keith style 240 grain bullets.

I would probably try out an S&W 460 just to see if I could handle it. You are probably right about a pump loaded with slugs.

I saw a Black bear just a few days ago near my house. He was a big one too. For some reason they don’t worry me too much but maybe they should. I have read that Black bears kill way more people than Brown bear or their cousin, Grizzlies.

I think if it were a shotgun, I would have a slug in the chamber then 00 3 inch buck for the rest.
