Trump to Allow Gun Collectors to Purchase Military Surplus M1911 Pistols
ConservativeTribune ^ | 27 Nov 2017 | V SAXENA

Included in the 2018 National Defense Authorization Act, which President Donald Trump intends to sign soon, is a provision that will allow the military to save an estimated $200,000 per year by selling surplus M1911 pistols to those in the public interested in purchasing them.

Used widely during World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, these historic firearms have been officially out of service since 1985, when the military replaced them with Beretta 92 pistols.

Since then, the military has been forced to store leftover M1911 pistols at a price of $2 per year. The International Business Times reported that the military currently possesses roughly 100,000 of these pistols, bringing the price for storage to about $200,000 every single year.

By allowing the military to sell these firearms to the public, Trump will therefore kill two stones with one bird: He’ll save the Pentagon money while also putting a smile on the faces of many gun collectors.

According to Task & Purpose, there’s a lot of history intertwined with the M1911 pistol: “For more than a hundred years, (it) has traveled with American troops into almost every crisis, hot spot, and war the United States has participated in.”

Militarily speaking, though, it’s not much use anymore for our men and women in uniform due to its very antiquated design.

“The new generation of polymer guns such as the Glock are also much easier to disassemble and incorporate new features such as striker-fired operating systems, trigger safeties, loaded chamber indicators and larger magazines capacities,” Task & Purpose notes.

Dovetailing back to the 2018 NDAA, which includes an amendment authorizing the government-funded Civilian Marksmanship Program to sell these pistols, it’s actually Congress that deserves most of the credit for both crafting it and then later passing it in mid-November.

And though it pains me to admit this, former President Barack Obama deserves an iota of credit as well.

The NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action explained that the 2016 National Defense Authorization Act passed by Obama two years ago “authorized the Secretary of Defense to transfer 1911s no longer in service to the CMP for public sale.”

Here’s the catch: “That language made the transfers subject to the Secretary’s discretion and capped them at 10,000 per year. Unsurprisingly, no actual transfers were made under the program while Obama remained in the White House.”

Of course.

However, the NDAA slated to be signed by Trump would make these transfers mandatory and also remove the unnecessary cap.

What remains unclear is when the sales will begin and how exactly the M1911s will be sold:

Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) about 3 weeks ago 11/22/17 - Latest update on the 1911’s….. Because of the limited number and the exceedingly high demand for the pistol, and the great level of Congressional scrutiny, the Board of Directors will make a decision regarding how sales will be handled. We have no further information at this time. – Mrs. Judith Legerski, Chairman, CMP Board of Directors

What’s known, though, is that the CMP’s eligibility requirements are pretty strict, so in case you’re interested in securing an M1911 pistol, I’d start getting my paperwork ready now.

Navy dumped them in the 90’s for the Beretta 9. 6 pack of 1911s for a hundred bucks back in the day...end up with 2 working well out of the parts with lots of spares. Never could get the big white numbers off the grips tho... ;)

Gun store prices for them now? I’ll pass.

Why purchase a used M1911 when you can buy a brand new Kimber? Firing a Kimber is an experience by itself. The workmanship is flawless and truly eye-candy.

Bought a Luger for $40 in 1963. Had it delivered in a brown paper bag through the mail. Bought my first box of 9mm ammo at Toomer’s corner and took it to the Opelika dump to shoot and empty a few magazines.
Yes, it was a totally different world.

Yep, it’s real. Max of 10,000 per year. There are a few hoops you have to jump through and only one per person per year. After they receive them it will be approximately 5 months before they have a sufficient quantity inventoried, graded, and inspected to open up sales. All sales by mail order only, no phone or website orders.

The number was more like 56,000 and Congress passed a law in early 96 preventing the destruction of serviceable M1s.

Would you trade the first sex you had for the last sex you had? I love 1911s and have several, but there are better weapons, I no longer carry a 1911. Yes there are better weapons than the 1911 but that was my first love and with the new ammunition available it will really hurt you.

I saw one, years ago, that had been run through a de-mill press. It was horrible! I wanted to cry. So did every one else who saw the results.

Back in 1979 I was on duty in the Armory at an Air Force Base in The Republic of Korea. At the time we had a few Army troops visiting our base and they were required to store their weapons in the armory when they were off duty.

Needless to say I was required to sign the weapons in and when I was handed the individual 1911 Pistols,All manufactured during the Second World War,I found that the parts were very loose. When I shook the pistol I could he the slide shaking.

I always wondered how accurate those pistols were when their parts were so loose.

I wonder to this day if the U.S.Army went and modified those pistols since that time.

To purchase the weapon as a collectors Item is One thing.but to think its a suitable combat weapon is something else again.

“Unfortunately ATF has a “once a machine gun always a machine gun policy”

They are such jackasses. They can say that all they want but when it gets to court either it IS a machine gun or it IS NOT a machine gun, and the definition is pretty clear. I would like to see the look on an ATF agents face when you walk in with a bumper from a Toyota Camry and ask them if it's still a machine gun.

Yeah, those guns are flat shot out. CMP will refurbish them somewhat, but they won't be nearly as pristine as similarly priced current manufacture 1911s.

Now, if they had just made the M14 available......

My M1 Garand and my perfect condition 6mm Swedish Mauser were bought from Woolworths Department Store, where they were just shoved into 55 gallon barrels until no more could fit. You had to sort of pick thru them for what you wanted.

$85.00 each.

The pistols are expected to be in all kinds of condition, from practically unfired, to unserviceable and useful for parts only. If any Singers show up, I expect them to go straight to auction. The CMP has always been generous on their grading and prices have been consistently 15-25% below market.

During my service I saw a few 1911’s made by Remington-Rand and I swear I recall one made by IBM.

Though that’s 40+ years ago and the mind could be playing tricks on me.

It is. IBM made M1 carbines during WWII, not M1911A1 pistols. The WWII M1911A1 contractors were Colt [of course!] Singer [the sewing machine folks, BEAUTIFULLY made, most went to the 8th Air Force or to other manufacturers as tooling/setup examples, though at least one may have been presented to a Russian soldier by President Roosevelt] Remington-Rand [another typewriter maker, Ithaca and railway equipment maker Union Switch and Signal.
