IN light of the Harvey Weinstein revelations, a mass-media campaign has been launched whose spearhead is the hashtag “#metoo.” Ostensibly it is a way of highlighting prevalent sexism and the abuse of women. But examining the idea behind it, does it actually do anything at all? Or is it a waste of time and resources that is taking away from actual programs that might make progress in this area?
For example, I would never force myself on a woman, nor would I ever use sexist language or abuse someone with sexist slurs or innuendo. I am fully aware that there are a small minority of men (and women) who DO do these things. Having #metoo plastered everywhere neither impacts me in terms of my awareness, nor would it stop me from engaging in these practices (because I would never do them in the first place).

Well, for starters, “pound me too” was probably a poor name choice.
Doesn’t the hashtag (#) mean pound? Pound me too?
In older parlance the ‘tag’ #metoo would be pronounced “Pound me too”.

I’d pick #bringbackourgirls. But there’s lot’s of competition.
#metoo probably has a therapeutic benefit to many women. Though also probably encourages some men in that even when victims scream (tweet) to the world about their actions, and have a “safe space” to talk about the attack, the women still won’t name the attackers.
Reminds me of when I was still working in pharmaceutical research. Every lab door and every storage cabinet had at least one, and usually several “hazardous” stickers: chemical and/or biological and/or radioactive. When everything is labeled, eventually you stop noticing! Like crying wolf too often.
It’s just an added level of participation trophy syndrome for the victim glorification society.
#MeToo is the liberals’ attempt to shift attention from Hollywood Democrat predators, to the “ALL MEN are predators” fake narrative.
It’s a filler “crisis.” Something to hype until something bigger comes along. They took a week off from trashing Trump, to trash all men in general.
Wait wait wait! Not useless. I once gave a fiver to a dude on the side of the road with a sign that said “I ain’t gonna lie. I need a beer”.
I appreciated the honesty. He appreciated his beer.
Look, sexual abuse is a serious issue, and destroys lives. That said, telling a dirty joke or “locker room talk” is NOT sexual abuse. By trying to redefine the word they demean its significance, just like they’ve done with “racist”.
I always called it "pound" and still do, but I had a math teacher who always referred to it as the "sharp" symbol, as in music. He said it was the "sharp" symbol long before it was the "pound" symbol.
