Trump says he's looking 'very, very strongly' at welfare reform

President Donald Trump said Monday his administration will start to consider reforming the welfare system in the United States, saying that some people are "taking advantage of the system."

The comment comes as the Trump administration struggles to get any sweeping legislation through Congress, despite Republicans controlling both the House and Senate. Trump failed to pass health care reform earlier this year and is currently working -- without much success so far -- to pass tax reform.

"People are taking advantage of the system and then other people aren't receiving what they really need to live and we think it is very unfair to them," said Trump, flanked by Defense Secretary James Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson during a Cabinet meeting. "Because some people are really taking advantage of our system from that standpoint."(continued)

Outstanding:

Work requirements
Drug testing
Max benefits
No benefits to illegals

Make sense...he’s bringing jobs, now push people to go to work.

A first step should be to consolidate all the various programs:

Examining the Means-tested Welfare State: 79 Programs and $927 Billion in Annual Spending

Spreading them out into dozens of agencies is a good way to hide the full scope. First, consolidate them all into one agency, and lay off the redundant federal employees. It would be hard for Democrats to generate widespread outrage about that.

Second would be to cap how much any recipient could receive, total, from all programs.

Third, institute ID checking and citizenship checking.

How about making them pick cotton the old fashioned way? Plenty of fields available.

Good its about damn time too..I remember a time being on welfare people were embarrassed to be on it..now they FLAUNT IT..some people truly need it to stay afloat and I totally understand that..but others are abusing the system. I once saw a woman in a MERCEDES using her EBT card at Whole Foods, WHOLE FOODS..I was shocked, she looked to be in her mid 40s, and seriously who would use their EBT card to purchase anything at Whole Foods, I understand Ralphs and Vons but Whole Foods come on, didnt look disabled, driving a nice car..some people need the welfare but others are abusing the system and need to be cut off

Please:
No assistance of any kind to refugees or immigrants, period.
No additional benefits for anyone for more than one child.
Benefits cannot be drawn for more than one year— lifetime cap.
End medicaid.
End EITC.

Eliminating these welfare programs, (and eliminating no fault divorce) would return this country to it’s roots in two generations. “Single moms” would disappear very quickly, and people would get married and stay married and work through their problems.

President Donald Trump said Monday his administration will start to consider reforming the welfare system in the United States, saying that some people are "taking advantage of the system."

Having spent part of my childhood in a welfare household, I can attest that "taking advantage of the system" is part of the poverty culture. For example, when I was a kid, there was a deposit on soda bottles, which were collected, washed, and reused. But if people bought the soda with food stamps, they did not have to pay the deposit. But they could still turn in the bottles for the deposit in cash. For kids who wanted to spend the summer playing pin-ball, those bottles were a way to get coins for the pin-ball machines.

Since I dislike soda, I wouldn't even drink the stuff. I'd pour most of it out and take the bottle back for the deposit.

There were plenty of other ways to game the system, and I'm sure there are even more now.
