Why San Antonio Turned Down Amazon’s New Headquarters
Texas Monthly ^ | October 12, 2017 | Leif Reigstad

Posted on 10/13/2017 6:29:03 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

On Wednesday, Texas Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn penned a joint letter to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, pitching the state of Texas as the landing site for the online retail giant’s planned second headquarters, HQ2. “Everything is bigger in Texas, and that includes our economy, our skilled workforce, and our quality of life,” they wrote, noting that three of the nation’s top-five fastest growing cities are in Texas: Houston, Austin, and San Antonio. All three of those cities and others across the state, including Dallas, El Paso, and Frisco, put themselves in the running for HQ2 when Amazon called for proposals last month. But on the same day Cruz and Cornyn wrote their letter to Bezos, two San Antonio leaders, Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff and Mayor Ron Nirenberg, wrote a separate letter to Bezos informing him that the Alamo city no longer wishes to be considered a potential landing spot for HQ2.

“We’ve long been impressed by Amazon and its bold view of the future,” they wrote. “Given this, it’s hard to imagine that a forward-thinking company like Amazon hasn’t already selected its preferred location. And, if that’s the case, then this public process is, intentionally or not, creating a bidding war between amongst states and cities. Sure, we have a competitive toolkit of incentives, but blindly giving away the farm isn’t our style.”

While San Antonio probably didn’t have a realistic shot to land HQ2 anyway—the detailed wish list Amazon released last month included a major airport and lots of available office space downtown, two things San Antonio doesn’t really have—it’s still surprising to see the city take a stand against the nationwide fervor to score HQ2, which is expected to generate 50,000 new jobs....

Wisconsin is giving Foxconn $3 billion dollars for only 13,000 factory jobs. Imagine what Amazon expects for 50,000 headquarters gigs.

Exactly! They expect to be given everything and the kitchen sink. They will get it.

All of the students in the SAISD receive free lunches.

This is a trend of public schools across the country. I think it is a scam on the "free lunch" program. I say that because when I had kids in high school they implemented the school breakfast program. It was "free" to all, not income based, no paperwork required. My daughter ate breakfast at home and did not go to the cafeteria. She was soon approached by staff and told to go to the cafeteria each morning and scan her student ID card for breakfast. The school was telling her she had to do it so the school would get more money. It became a big deal because she refused to scan her card for a breakfast she did not want, no plans to eat. I had to have a talk with them about "free meals" not being free, and the idea that they were ordering students to lie, cheat, and steal money from the government for the school.

Now there is a movement to make all school lunches "free" as well.

Yes, you can be a landscaper or maid for those 50,000 workers and tolerate the added crime. Benefit everyone, not just a single monopoly.

“Many speak only Spanish. All of the students in the SAISD receive free lunches. Does this sound like a place for Amazon?”

Recruit students from NEISD. Problem with SA is transportation.

“I seriously doubt that Amazon would have created 50,000 six figure jobs in San Antonio. Because of the cost of living, the salaries would be lower, and that 50,000 number probably includes 40,000 non-executive level employees.”

As long as Amazon doesnt give it to Chicago I don’t care where it goes. Chicago is probably the leaat deserving city for any form of good luck.

I'd be hot if my city fathers turned them down if I was still in the labor force.

Amazon is no doubt asking for hundreds of millions of $$ in free land, tax abatements and probably outright warehouses and office buildings - all paid for by the taxpayer.

Here in NY, Andrew Cuomo literally built a $750 million plant for Solar City/Tesla, to make "new generation" solar panels. Same BS logic was used - thousands of jobs, leading industry, blah blah. Nearly two years after the building was completed, everyone is still waiting for Musk to bring over some 2nd hand manufacturing equipment from Panasonic in Malaysia (the plans have changed!) to start producing some kind of solar panels.

This is how crony-capitalism works.

San Antonio probably doesn’t have enough gay bars to be seriously in the running.

So you order nothing from Amazon?

You can usually get the same item from eBay - with free shipping. Just ordered my wife's cookbook that way - saved $5 and $6.95 shipping.

NYS poured $3 bil down the incentive rat hole.

It doesn’t work.

” 50,000 families “

Indian families. That’s all Amazon desires to hire.

We have over 5 million illegal alien Indians in this country. Companies desire them more than Americans because they can pay them so much cheaper.

Wherever Amazon goes, they have targeted hiring Indians.

The intersection of the database, GIS, and graphic arts is great.

There is a field of study for the youngsters.

I live in San Antonio, and I would personally benefit if 50,000 people started earning a bunch of money - whether they were from here originally, or moved in from elsewhere.

However, I agree (can’t believe I’m saying this) with (Democrat) Wolff and (supposedly independent, but actually Democrat) Nirenberg that we shouldn’t get into a bidding war for this.

Further, I don’t like the idea of becoming Austin South. We’re badly off here as it is, from the political POV; we don’t need tens of thousands of Leftist outsiders - and their campaign contributions - coming here.

Bye!

With the money they want in tax breaks, Canada seems nice. They are brutal to work for physically.

Now, I do understand that they are probably the average worker and I was wondering, is Amazon union? Probably not. I know the queen bee owner doesn’t work as hard the lowest on the totem pole. Being a communist sympathizer I would think he would be paying everything for them in the same manner he receives. Too bad he’s not a Christian and knows the parable of the talents. Some receive 10 talents, some 5, some 1. That is reality.

No.

Being hired to work at a high level by Jeff Bezos means he has screened you politically. Why did you think that the Washington Post skewed even harder left after he bought it?

The district my kids are in at the moment offers free breakfast and lunch to all, as a response to Hurricane Harvey. I don’t doubt they will keep it up for the whole year, instead of expiring the offer at the end of October, as I’m sure some parents will complain about having to pay for lunches again. Of course, they’ll not complain that the school taxes are too high. And to think, I live in a rural area south of Houston.
