Washington is too far in the past for most people in these times to give much thought, except as an historical figure. Patton, MacArthur, Pershing and many others command much respect, but none can conjure up the emotion among huge segments of the modern population so as to be considered “beloved”. Lee, however, has always held that tremendous emotional appeal that few others could attain. In a poll, I believe Lee would win the title of “most beloved” general.
