Apple Potentially Targeting Tesla for Takeover, Says Citi Analyst
The Drive ^ | May 9, 2017 | Rob Stumpf

Could Apple be gunning for an acquisition or merger with Tesla? A Citigroup analyst believes it's a possibility—especially with Apple's huge cash reserve that has recently surpassed a quarter of a trillion dollars. With big things on the horizon for Tesla Motors, and cash burning a hole in Apple’s pocket, it’s an angle to consider.

It's fair to say that Tesla wasn't the only company to appear in this forecast, made by Citigroup analyst Jim Suva. Netflix and Disney are two other big names tossed around in addition to the automaker. But Apple is currently working on a self-driving vehicle program of its own, and was granted a permit for autonomous vehicle testing in California. The company's test vehicles also been spotted testing the tech on-road.

Acquisitions are no surprise for tech companies. It is relatively commonplace for some large organization to be late to party when it comes to new technology. When this happens, the easiest and quickest, though not always the most affordable, entry to the market is to buy out a competitor. Could this potentially be what Apple is up to?

Apple has no shortage of money. The tech giant has more on hand cash than the entire GDP of Chile, Finland, or Greece. Their off-shore bank account numbers are swelling to the tune of $256.8 billion, up $10 billion from last quarter, and $8 billion from the previous. That is a ton of money. Quite literally, as that amount of cash in $100 bills weighs just over 2,231 tons.

Recently, Tesla CEO Elon Musk had met with Apple's head of mergers and acquisitions – much as he has done numerous time before. On a phone call with Bloomberg, Musk declined to speak about if he had had acquisition talks with “one or more companies” over the past year. When asked if Tesla was for sale, Musk responded with “I think that’s very unlikely”.

Musk does mention that if there were a scenario where it would be more likely to create a mass-market affordable car, it would make sense to consider the possibility of selling out. However, at this time, h doesn’t currently see such a scenario. This doesn't mean that the sale isn't an eventuality, just not necessarily a "right now" decision, at least according to Musk. At least we can agree that Musk has his company in mind, and not just the bottom line of his bank account.

Apple would be stupid to buy Tesla. Apple is not stupid.

Tesla is destined to an eventual Solyndra-like destiny, IMHO.

Two companies that rely on overpriced, outdated tech. Sounds like a perfect marriage.

Agreed. Apple has been testing out its own car.

Then again Musk makes his money by selling out

Citibank Analcyst speculates that Apple might buy Tesla with some of Apple's spare change. Tesla survives on Federal electric car/alternative fuel tax credits for both sales and energy usage to charge their users' cars. If they disappear in a tax reform bill, Tesla's retail sales will take a tail spinning drop. What do you think? Is acquiring Tesla in Apple's best interest?— PING!

Apple will buy a floppy disk drive manufacturer before it invests in Tesla. And the odds of Apple spending any money on a floppy disc drive business are as close to zero as you can get.

Whichever battery-car maker develops the ‘golden’ battery which can take a charge and deliver 500 miles....will be of immediate interest to Apple. My suspicion is that Telsa has a fair amount of development going on with batteries. He’s probably got a project that will deliver within two years. It would make sense to deliver the car and battery technology to Apple, and move on.

Tesla is not a guy who will stay in one technology for a long period. He takes his profit and plows it into the next idea.

His name is Elon Musk. Don’t ever confuse this government handout sack of shit with the genius Nikola Tesla. It’s nerd blasphemy...

Trump should let it go through then cut off the $ subsidy spigot Obama opened. Their cash proves it’s not needed .

Without new battery concepts, electric cars are limited to city driving. Anything more than an hour one way is not feasible. Most people would like to take some sort of road trip every few months.

Funny you should mention that.

Just yesterday this article appeared.

"It turns out that Tesla has one of the world’s premiere battery experts, Jeff Dahn, working on a myriad of potential solutions (see below). And Dahn recently explained that: “doubling the lifetime of the [battery] cells used in the Tesla products… was the goal of the project and it has already been exceeded. We are not going to stop… we are going to go as far as we can.” Dahn said that his Tesla research is already “going into the company’s products.”

No. It’s a ridiculous idea unless Tesla goes bankrupt first.

You’re way off, the tesla S has range of 265 miles now and a slightly bigger pack is coming soon. There are charging stations all over and charging times are short enough for a meal so very long trips are possible

Then again, there are those of us who think Electric Cars are pretty much "dead out of the gate."

IMO, Hybrid (gas/electric) is really the way to go. Luxury car makers already know this since they're creating luxury Hybrids.

Hybrid technology is an excellent way to boost gas mileage AND increase performance at the same time.

This is why for the real car enthusiasts "of the future" Hybrids are the way to go.

Is the charging free or do you pay for it with a $40 salisbury steak?

The only problem being twice as many parts that eventually break.

Hopefully the meat is chewy. Doesn’t a charge take 1/2 hour? How much does battery life decrease when using fast charging?

“Whichever battery-car maker develops the ‘golden’ battery which can take a charge and deliver 500 miles....will be of immediate interest to Apple”.

The long evasive golden battery; whoever comes up with it will be rich beyond words. But, the challenge is not just range, it’s recharge time. Ask yourself this question; you and the fam are road tripping across country and its time to recharge. How long would you be willing to sit around and wait on a recharge? Would it be one hour, 30 mins, 15 mins? For me it would be 15 mins, 30 mins if perhaps at a truck stop and the fam has to do a pee break and maybe eat lunch. That would be the max for me.
