Their are horrors stories with all calibers especial with ball ammo.
Any body who thinks that getting shot with a 9mm bullet is a joke hasn’t had bullet holes in their body.
Sorry solid hit with any decent round from 22 on up most likely well require surgery and hospital time to recover.
Sorry getting shot is no laughing matter.
With best quality bullets, there is little difference. I guess I would pick .45 in a high capacity Glock. Otherwise it would be a 17 shot Sig vs. an 8 shot 1911.
If that was the choice it would be 9mm.
I grantee you if those neighbors had been armed they could have easily returned fire after being hit multiple times at near point blank range. The .45 is a much more incapacitating round.
.45 ACP there is no substitute.
Those old .38 New Army and New Navy Colts they used back then had about one third the power of a 9mm.
Unfortunately, controlled, and instrumented ballistics tests on a live battle fields aren’t easy to accomplish.
From the eye witness accounts these people being shot weren’t even reacting as if they had been shot at all. It looked like he was missing them.
That's because the military is currently restricted to using FMJ instead of hollowpoint. That needs to change. Our enemies will not be working under any treaty restrictions, so we shouldn't either.
The three most critical factors in “one-shot-stops” are:
1) Shot placement
2) Shot placement
3) Shot placement
That said, my main carry piece is a Springfield XD in 9mm. It can use the +P loads. 16+1 rounds in case my shot placement is not perfect.
My back-up....usually under the seat of my pick-up....is a Charter arms Bulldog in .44 special. Only 5 rounds, but sometimes you want big holes.
I doubt that many people on FR will have an opinion on this question.
However, here’s my take.
1. I keep a .45 1911 ready as my primary defensive handgun at home, right beside the 12 gauge Remington 870. The 1911 only has 8 rounds in each magazine, but I naturally shoot well with it, almost without adjusting to aim, and I fire at least a few rounds every day. If I have to shoot, any decent hit will stop the threat.
2. My backup handgun is a 9 mm Glock with 33 rounds, stored just behind the 1911 - I have spare magazines for both but don’t plan on reloading the 1911. If I need more than 8 shots, I am shifting to the Glock and won’t need to reload for quite a few rounds. I don’t shoot quite as well quickly with the Glock as with the 1911, but I can still rapid fire and get every shot in the black in just a few seconds - again, I fire at least a few rounds almost every day. If I have to shoot enough times to reload the Glock, that’s way too many 1911 magazines to handle.
5 rules of a gun fight:
1) gun beats no gun
- so the hand cannon you leave at home or the gun that jams and you dont know how to clear, is no gun
2) a hit beats a miss
- a .22 that hits is worth a whole lot more than the .44 mag that misses
3) fast beats slow
- talking about getting into the fight. The first person to shoot often makes the other take cover
4) big holes beat small holes
- subject to the three above rules, carry the biggest hole maker that you can shoot accurately and get into the gun fight quickly
5) two holes beat one hole
- if it is worth shooting once, shoot twice. Remember this when selecting ammo capacity
20 years ago there was no debate. .45 and .40 were far superior.
However, with the new hot loads and excellent bullets the 9mm is just as good as either of those and better in some categories.
Thinking that .45 or .40 is somehow superior in the modern era is just turning a blind eye to available data and reality.
A modern 9mm through only a 4in barrel will send a 125gr bullet down range at over 1200fps. And that bullet will expand to about .70 inches and blow right through a big man. Even if it hits ribs in front and back.
comparing the performance of FMJ ammo in a self defense or LEO context is a fools errand.
“Oops. Sorry for double post.”
Apology not needed. A double tap seems appropriate for this thread.
Ask cops. They say 9mm bounces off glass.
I’m the same. I can’t hit particularly well with my Beretta; however, I can shoot really well with either of my .45 ACPs. (I have a Colt and a Kimber.)
9mm. Extra 500 fps or so velocity (which is what actually kills,) extra mag capacity in the same amount of space in a .45 magazine, modern hollow points open to .452 and often more, the rounds are vastly cheaper, and no muzzle rise lets me hit them faster. Hitting faster, in this case, is also hitting harder. I’ll advocate my 9 all day, every day, any day.
Uh huh. Two of them.
