Undocumented immigrants, officials discuss Trump’s policies

Undocumented immigrants and elected officials gathered at a local church to discuss threatening immigration policies and how to deal with them Thursday night.

In a meeting that frequently switched between English and Spanish at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 1521 NW 34th St., about 40 undocumented immigrants listened to guidelines set forth by the American Civil Liberties Union on how to defend themselves against President Donald Trump’s mass-deportation agenda.

The event was led by local grassroots group Madres Sin Fronteras, which translates to Mothers Without Borders. The group, led in part by UF alumnus Beto Soto, was created to preserve the human rights of all Gainesville citizens, regardless of immigration status.

Alachua County Sheriff Sadie Darnell, Gainesville Mayor Lauren Poe and other community leaders attended the meeting, which lasted about two hours.

Everyone at the event, about 100 in total, clapped when Darnell arrived. Alachua County was the only Florida county listed for failing to comply with Immigration and Customs Enforcement policy in a report published by the Department of Homeland Security, according to Alligator archives.

“My role, my responsibility, and that of all those who work with me, is about human rights,” Darnell told the crowd. “We care about people who are victimized.”

Darnell, who distributed her business card to the meeting’s attendees, said ACSO adheres to most of ACLU’s guidelines. She added that if anyone is being treated poorly by an Alachua County Sheriff’s officer, they should personally let her know.

Undocumented immigrants stood in front of the crowd to deliver tearfilled testimonials about why they left their countries, and how frightening it is to live in fear of being deported.

One speaker, an immigrant who has lived illegally in the U.S. for more than three years, left Honduras to escape her husband’s abuse.

A translator explained that the woman, whose first name is Leslie, is afraid her husband — a professional hitman — would kill her and her son if she were to be sent back.

“Trump’s campaign and voice does not represent us. We are not killers, we are not criminals, we are not rapists,” Leslie said. “We are here to work and give a better future to our families.”

Poe, who said this kind of meeting will be the first of many, thanked those who were courageous enough to share painful stories.

“In Gainesville, whoever you are, wherever you came from and however long you’ve been here, you’re welcomed and we’re glad that you’re here,” he said. “I’m here tonight as one of your leaders to make sure every single person in the city feels welcomed and a part of the community.”

Trump’s campaign and voice does not represent us.

Why should it represent illegal non-citizens? President Trump represents U.S. citizens, particularly those who voted for him. You want human rights, complain to the leaders of your own countries, particularly since the human rights of U.S. citizens trump yours! Damn illegals think they own our country.

They should not worry. GOP Congress will do nothing and court will go against President. So all illegals should enjoy life in USA.

“Living in the shadows”

There should have been ICE agents waiting to arrest and deport them.

I agree. If you’re not a citizen, you don’t get a say. Period.

Sheriff Darrell sounds like a PC fool who is going to get somebody killed while she practices Tai Chi and sings Kumbaya.

Her job is to protect the community from criminals, not to protect human rights. That falls to the FBI and the Civil Rights Division of the Dept. of Justice.

Obviously she doesn’t know that by being here without authorization, the people she is referring to are “illegal aliens”, whether they are nice or not.

I know that many have fled from crime and communist tyranny, as well as just corrupt governments, but I wish they would go the “asylum” route so that they can state their case for asylum legally. That would save them a lot of problems down the road.

As for the Mayor, why is it that Democrat women politicians are such dumbasses? The same for Democrat women law enforcement officers in the sanctuary cities and towns?

Their jobs are to protect “all citizens” and “guests” (legal or illegal) but by playing the anti-Trump leftist anti-immigration laws card, they expose themselves for what they are, “selective justice” clowns.

The next time an illegal criminal does something serious in their community, I would like to know about it, and how it was handled, if at all.

We just had a horrific (illegal/questionable status) rape by two non-America born Hispanics of a 14 year old girl, and one’s defense lawyer says that the sex was “consensual” despite the violence, blood, tape on the mouth, etc.

Obviously this legal ahole never read the law that says sex with any girl under the age of 16 (in most states) is “statutory rape” and a felony. Add in beatings, taping, sodomy, forced oral sex, frontal rape, and threats, and you have an “all American boy” according to his lawyer.

Homey don’t play that shit no more.

BS. Send her back.

And so why was ICE and DHS not at this meeting to round everyone up and perp walk them out to waiting paddy wagons?

Why, I will tell you. Because doing something about those that are already here and that are not in prison or that are not violating crimes out in our face will be handled with kit gloves. That is right, 20-30 million illegal invaders will be granted amnesty in the end. The dreamers will then be allowed to bring their extended families over if they wish adding another 10-12 million more to the mix.

Aren't elections great.......

Also note that after three years she has not made an effort to learn English. (In any case, even Honduras is big enough for her to avoid her husband.)

Donald Trump’s mass-deportation agenda.

It's not an "agenda". It's the law.

...to discuss threatening immigration policies...

This is what enforcing the law is called by these nutjobs. They want to let in all of these people and then complain that there's too many people in the world.

Sounds like a target rich environment. ICE should have been in attendance, too.

This is clearly aiding and abetting illegal aliens, and the NGO (Spanish Mothers w/out Borders) should lose IRS status, and the ACLU attorneys who arranged gathering should be dis-BARred.
