ANN ARBOR, Mich. - A father of four from Metro Detroit is facing possible deportation Monday after having lived in the United States for 18 years.

Yousef Ajin's supporters are growing louder after he was detained last month during a routine check-in with agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He was working toward gaining his citizenship.

Ajin's loved ones and friends and local leaders are rallying around him in an effort to keep the family together.

A deportation hearing for Ajin is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Patrick V. McNamara Federal Building. The family hopes for a large crowd to come and show support for their father.

"It's sad that this could happen to a family that lived in America for so long," Betoul Ajin, Yousef Ajin's daughter, said in a short video that was made by local filmmaker Donald Harrison.

Betoul Ajin's high school paper in Ann Arbor documented her father's struggle to stay in the United States.

"At first, I was really nervous to start to tell people," Betoul Ajin said. "But then I was, like, 'You know, everybody's going to find out one way or another.'"

The video and article indicate her father was born in Kuwait and is a Jordanian immigrant. His family said Yousef Ajin has been in the country for 18 years and is working toward citizenship.

Yousef Ajin's wife and children are U.S. citizens. On Jan. 30, during a routine check-in with immigration officials in Detroit, he was detained.

"It sucks to see him work so hard, come here, and for him to have to lose it all and go over this new government that we have is something," Shadi Nabilsi, a family friend, said.

The story is gaining traction and support in Ann Arbor. The district superintendent tweeted her support for Yousef Ajin, and the mayor of Ann Arbor is hoping he can stay.

"We are a welcoming community, and I felt it was important for me to speak out," Mayor Christopher Taylor said.

The children have only seen their father once since he was detained, and they're worried they'll never see him again.

"I don't think anyone should feel scared to be in a country like America," Betoul Ajin said. "It's supposed to be a country that was built on great things."

Yousef Ajin was the breadwinner for his family, but since he was detained, his wife has been working 12-hour days to support the family.

Yousef Ajin has three daughters and a son, who has severe disabilities. The girls said they're working to care for their brother while their mother works to support them.

How many deportations are not “sudden”?

Did he ever apply to become a citizen? Did he have a green card? Ot did he not work as hard as everyone says he did?

a bank robber who robbed banks for 18 years finally gets caught- what should we do? Guess what? He’s gonna be separated from his family too-

Guess that yusef shoulda perhaps obeyed the law to begin with eh? He has only himself to blame for his current predicament!

It’s just sad that after nearly 20 years of getting away with (tax evasion) (fraud) (extortion) the government wants to tear a family apart by sending their loving provider to prison.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

An amazingly information free, one-sided article.

There is absolutely no mention about what his immigration status is other than "in the country for 18 years and is working toward citizenship". Does he have a green card? Visa? Just here illegally and checking on the state department website to see if he can stay?

Also, no mention was made about why he was detained? What was the purpose for his "routine check-in with immigration officials"?

How about giving a hint of journalism. Even a little bit will be a nice start.

Yeah? and It sucks that cocaine dealers who were just slapped on the wrist by previous administration now face the cold harsh reality that they will have to do long prison sentences if caught now that we have a president that respects the law. Respect the law Yusef, plain and simple-

For 18 years?

Crapamundi! My parents achieved it 5 yrs as did my grandmother and none of them spoke any English when they arrive, of course the immigrated legally, I guess it takes 18 plus years when you are a scofflaw illegal alien, I wonder, was he just about to turn his life around too? So for over a decade and a half he robbed an American or Legal Resident of a job.

“There is absolutely no mention about what his immigration status is other than “in the country for 18 years and is working toward citizenship”

Is “working toward citizenship” the illegal alien equivalent of aspiring to be a rapper?

What some of these illegals do is file paperwork that has no chance of success, but it takes months to get rejected, and with a little luck you can keep the ball rolling even longer. During that time you can say you are “working toward” whatever status you filed for, even though there’s no way you will ever get it because you simply don’t meet the criteria. But the article makes it sound like they’re progressing as if they were earning a merit badge or a college degree, and their progress was unfairly interrupted.

Another problem is that much of the media no longer feels any need to have a clue about the subjects they’re reporting on.

He shouldn’t have to obey our laws: he’s brown.

What company employed him? After all, hiring an illegal is against the law. Now that he is jailed, his wife is now working. Who is employing her? Since the father is an illegal, and thus a criminal, Why didn’t state protective services take the children and get them out of the bad environment?
