How do you check to see if your 1911 is clear?

There are a couple ways of checking your 1911 pistol to make sure its clear. Larry from Vickers Tactical goes over some different ways you can check to make sure your 1911 is clear, and why he prefers the press check.

Most have been taught is the "pinch" check. This is where you apply pressure to the slide with your index finger to the rear about half an inch, while the thumb was hooked in the trigger guard. However, accident occurs when the slide slips forward and the thumb accidentally hits the trigger resulting in an accidental discharge. (AD)

With the "press" check, you grab the slide either at the front or the rear and pull back the slide. Just enough to see if the 1911 barrel is clear. Check out the video here.

Pull the trigger while pointing it at your foot.

Look down the barrel and shine a flashlight in. If you see the tip of a bullet, it’s got one in the chamber.

This method is most risky, but keeps my heart rate up.

Sounds like you’re talking about two different actions here.

If you’re checking to see if the weapon is clear, just go on and clear it. Remove magazine. Slide to the rear and locked. Visually check. Clear.

If you’re checking to see if you’re carrying a hot one in the chamber, use one of the other methods.

Couldn’t help but think of this right off the bat. I’m sure we’ve all seen this but still worth watching. EVERY gun is ALWAYS loaded.

How many fails do you see?

drop mag, pull slide back until lock. Finger never goes inside trigger guard unless clear to fire.

Actually, if you had a Glock, you could just look at the loaded chamber indicator and skip all that pushing and pinching business. If you want to be extra safe, you can run your finger over it. Just sayin’

Ya CLEAR the thing by ejecting the mag and locking back the slide,
THAT’s called “CLEAR”.

That there ‘pinch check’ illustrated is to see that you REALLY DID chamber a round—and then let the hammer down (as I do).

If YOU are a butterfingers—don’t do it and stick with REVOLVERS (as I usually do). Better, more accurate, safer and you don’t lose your brass.

Pull the trigger while pointing it at your foot.

Liberals should look down the barrel while performing this test.

Why not just drop the mag and rack the slide? If there is a round chambered, it will be extracted, and with the mag down, the slide will lock open for a visual confirmation.

You don’t need to remove the mag entirely. When you want to resume shooting, just reseat the mag, toggle the slide release, and you’re cocked, locked, and ready to rock.

Number 1. Grip the butt firmly with either your right or left hand.
Number 2. Look and see if the hammer is in the cocked position. If it is ,o.k. If not, place your thumb on the hammer spur and ease it back to the cocked position.< /> Number 3. Maneuver 911 until you can see down the muzzle. number 4. While still looking down the muzzle, gently squeeze the trigger until the hammer falls. Number 5. When the hammer falls and you hear a click, the 911 is clear. Number 6. If you see a flash and hear a bang, somebody goofed up. But the silver lining to an otherwise dark cloud is that it won't matter to you any longer. Depending on your point of view, your troubles are over, or just beginning.

It's "clear" if the magazine is out and the slide's locked back and it's lying on the shooting bench, pointing downrange, and you can see daylight through the chamber and the barrel? Would that count as "clear"?

Same principle as a revolver is "clear", if we must use that term, if it's lying on the shooting bench, pointing downrange, with the cylinder open and no rounds in the cylinder.

Otherwise it's not never ever "clear", even if we've done some kind of "check" on it. It's always loaded, and one should always treat it like it's always loaded all the time.

Works every time, with no risk of complication...

I rarely check my 1911 to see if it is clear. I do check a few times a day to make sure there is one in the chamber.

That’s why the Smith .40 M&P Shield is nice; there’s a little hole over the chamber and you can see if it’s loaded. Works especially well with shiny cases.
