American TV abroad
Vanity | Self

Posted on 01/29/2017 3:51:42 PM PST by JosephW

Have moved to Australia and my wife is going crazy as she misses her favorite shows.

Hulu, much of Netflix, PlayStation Vue and many other viewing options are region locked and won't work.

Looking for advice and reasonable price where necessary. At the point of paying someone who has an extensive cable package to install a sling box on an additional cable box.

Thanks in advance.

Congratulations. I moved to mainland China back in 2004. It will take some getting used to, but you will be fine. Australia is sort of like the USA back in the 1950's in many ways. You will love it. Appreciate the meat pies, and enjoy not having to buy things for $9.98, etc...

You will get over the American media soon enough. It's far too manipulative.

OK. To answer your query. All of American television and most movies are all available for FREE in China. Unlike the USA, Australia does not block Chinese websites or software.

You can watch them using the Chinese versions of "Netflix". These companies compete directly with NetFlix and other American companies so American spy-software or protection software blocks their installation by claiming that they are trogens or the like. Just either disable your protection software for the particular application, or replace it with a Chinese brand like 360.

Here are some of my favorite applications;

Funshion
American movies through BaiDu
American TV shows through BaiDu
American movies through SoHu
American TV shows through SoHu

I hope this helps.

Netflix US actively blocks VPNs to prevent people from accessing the superior US service from overseas, so torrents (as suggested above) or similar really are the easiest and most efficient way to get your shows. You can also use VPNs with torrents to protect your privacy.

I’m curious how tough it was emigrating to Australia. I thought it was just about impossible.

You might try Kodi with the Exodus addon. You can try it out on your PC or phone... there are Windows, Android and iOS versions.

If it works, you can buy an Android Kodi/Exodus TV box for $12 US on eBay.

I was actually born here, so it was easy. My boys had citizenship conferred on them. Hardest part was the permanent partner visa for my wife.

They would host a sling box on an additional cable box. I’d pay for the additional cable box and for a movie package. Win-win

Agreed. VPN is the way to go. But be aware that Netflux, Hulu (I think) now block access to any customer using a VPN.

Supposedly there are ways around it but I cannot speak to whether or not it is possible. Buy 1 month access (Private Internet Access can be monthly, 6.95, every 6 months or 12 months 35.00) try it & see if it is what you need.

Actually, immigration here is a major issue. Islamic is viewed by many to be a serious threat. It is possible that we may see a bit of a shakeup in the March election with One Nation (run by Pauline Hanson, how Aussies spell Trump) gaining seats.

Yes, limiting immigration is racist to the left (Labour aka Democrats and Greens) and too extreme to the moderates (Liberals aka Republicans). In the last election Liberals lost a few seats to Labour, but more importantly, many of the retained seats were held by the most conservative and those Allied to One Nation.
