Georgetown professor says whites should keep ‘individual reparations account’

Georgetown University professor and author Michael Eric Dyson says white people should keep an “individual reparations account” to make donations to black groups and atone for America’s history of slavery and racism.

Mr. Dyson was discussing his forthcoming book, “Tears We Cannot Stop: A Sermon to White America,” with New York Times Magazine when he touched on a subject in his book that talks about white people making reparations on the local and individual level.

The Times’ Ana Marie Cox said Mr. Dyson suggested donating to the United Negro College Fund or paying “the black person who cuts your grass double what you might ordinarily pay.”

“Look, if it doesn’t cost you anything, you’re not really engaging in change; you’re engaging in convenience,” Mr. Dyson said. “You’re engaged in the overflow. I’m asking you to do stuff you wouldn’t ordinarily do. I’m asking you to think more seriously and strategically about why you possess what you possess....

Actually, whites were the first slaves on this continent after colonies were set up. How many people were kidnapped, forced into service on HRM ships, then dumped onto the shores of America to work themselves to death? The white slaves like the Irish, were thought of as LOWER than the black slaves. It took real money to purchase a black, but a white slave was a dime a dozen. People need to read and learn their history. Andrew Johnson came from just such a background, that is why he was not so happy with Lincoln freeing the black slaves, and the OTHER slaves were left to be ground into dust...like the Chinese, or the low class Brits.

I think if Mr. Dyson is so troubled by the history of man, he should donate his entire wealth, including his home, to the minority charity of his choosing and donate his job as well.

I myself have no inclination to donate to anyone for any transgressions, real or imagined, by generations before me. Let the dead rest in peace.

They can instead give what they owe to an African-American as reparation.
