What's your least favorite Christmas song?
Me ^ | 12/02/12016 | Me

I'm just curious about what songs at Christmas time make you change the station or jump the track on that cd.

Just one?

“Santa baby”
“Jinglebell Rock”
“I saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus”

There are others, but I do not want to risk getting an earworm....

“Christmas Shoes” - it was good when it first came out but way over-exposed (and I am a big Newsong fan).
Any version of “12 Days of Christmas” EXCEPT the Relient K version - they pound through it in about 3 minutes, even adding extra lyrics.

Here's Sailor Moon's version of Last Christmas you might like better.

Chipmunks, ARGH !!

For revenge, seek out "Chipmunks Roasting on an Open Fire". It's on Youtube, and is one of my "must listens" every Christmas season. I really need to learn to post links.....

I don’t mind the original Santa baby. It is tongue in cheek like Diamonds are a Girl’s Beat Friend. But when Madonna sings it, it sounds so cheesy and atupid.

He liked park restrooms. And he wasn’t giving his “heart” into those glory holes either. ;)

“I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas. “

Ok, now, that one makes me cry. Sorry. My second son at age 4 did a Christmas show with his baby gymnastics class and they did a little “dance routine” to that song. Not a single kid was doing it “properly” and the coaches were in front acting it out for them. They were so dang adorable and I was full of pregnancy hormones and cried while watching. And now 14 years later I still get misty eyed thinking of those adorable little ones. Yes, I cry to “I Want a Hippopotamus” and I enjoy it.

Jingle Bells, by any artist. It is insufferably overplayed.

I like this version by Robert Goulet

I like that one. I’m Jewish and I like a lot of Christmas songs. Secular mostly, but strangely my favorite is O Holy Night. It’s just so gorgeous. I keep switching to Sirius channel seventeen in between talk radio shows in the car. I’m ok with most of the songs.

Oh my gosh, I LOVE “Baby, it’s Cold Outside.” It is so flirty and must be so fun to sing. And Seth MacFarlane is actually one of the BEST males at that song.

“Wonderful Chritmastime” by Paul McCartney. I’ve hated it since 1979.

Keith Emerson put out a Christmas album years ago. I like it, but I’m guessing lots of Freeper’s would hate it. So - I figured I could post something from it!

Captain Starship Christmas, with local middle schoolers singing. Fun song.

‘Twas a fellow Freeper who turned me on to this gem a few years ago - Mind you, not the worst songs ever, just a very nice album of Christmas classics done up as surf music by a Korean band called “HE 5” The album is called “Merry Christmas - Psychedelic Sound” and was released in 1969.

While I haven’t found the whole album in one piece you can follow the links on the sidebar for the two cuts I’m posting here...

HE 5 -[7]- Jingle Bells - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqWgTKR0ppc

HE 5 -[8]- Auld Lang Syne (With a little James Brown)

Enjoy !

I think it was Seth’s version when I realized it ain’t flirty, it’s rapey.

I'm a collector of Christmas music and have over 10,000 (not a typo) Christmas or Christmas related songs in my collection in every genre from Celtic/Folk to New Age to Alternative Rock.

But would you believe that I never listen to Christmas music on the radio? At least 90 percent of the Christmas songs they play over the radio - or in the shopping malls - is utter crap.

Here is just a sampling of my Christmas songs that you will never (or rarely) hear on the radio - all of them classics:

"The Christmas Song" by Angel
"Fairytale of New York" by The Pogues
"Spaceman Came Traveling" by Chris DeBurgh
"When Southern Bells Ring" by The Judybats
"Christmas Eve" by Blackmore's Night
"The Children of December" by The Slip
"I Saw Three Ships" by Sting
"Chasing Christmas" by SuperImposer

Just a tiny sample of what's out there. I've been collecting for over 30 years - I pretty much have it all. Except for most of the dreck you hear on the radio.

I can see that. I heard it for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I was surprised to find out it has been around since the 1950’s. I just didn’t have the positive connection that you do. I was in a hardware store, and it just didn’t have the warm and cozy familiarity of Nature King Cole singing “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire...” I have heard it a few times since then, and I can see it eventually growing on me, because I generally like silliness, as opposed to genuinely bad and annoying stuff such as the multiple versions of “Last Christmas I Gave You My Heart.”

By the way, before I came on this thread, I had just watched the “Dirty Jobs” in which Mike Rowe had to clean out a hippopotamus habitat at a zoo. Show that to any kid who wants a hippopotamus and I guarantee they will change their minds!

Wait, you mean it isn’t “Police Nabbed my Dad”? I’ve been singing it wrong all these years...
