December 3, 2016 Petraeus for Secretary of State Is a Bad Call By Rob Caskey

In the parade of prospective cabinet picks making their way to the penthouse of Trump Tower to meet with the president-elect, few have come with more pedigree or more (figurative) baggage than General David Petraeus. Tipped for the position of secretary of state, the retired four-star general is considered to bring with him a wealth of experience garnered from nearly 15 years in the higher echelons of the U.S. Army, including time spent at the helm of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as a stint as head of the CIA. But in his interview to become the nation's top diplomat, he likely had some awkward questions to answer regarding a scandal involving the sharing of state secrets with his biographer and paramour, Paula Broadwell.

At least he should have. But Donald Trump has been vocal in his defense of the general even though he was found guilty of the same crime committed by Hillary Clinton. Perhaps a more likely sticking point between Trump and Petraeus, however, will be their diverging views over the USA’s commitment to NATO and its continued expansion.

Granted, David Petraeus shot to prominence due to the successful counterinsurgency methods he employed as the commander of forces in Iraq that resulted in a substantial drop in violence. As the head of the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth two years prior to that, Petraeus wrote the military’s manual on counterinsurgency strategy.

(snip)

After serving as head of Central Command, Petraeus became the Director of the CIA, where he met his downfall after revelations of an affair with his biographer. ...

While I agree with your position, I can’t help but think that the confirmation process would make for great theatre. Just imagine the objections of democrat committee members regarding mis-handled classified material juxtaposed with the Hillary saga. Hmmmmmmm . . .

Two sides to the coin of thought.
Petraeus has much experience and though he was found to be wanting in the loyalty to oath department, why should anyone question this fault? Was HRC denied the opportunity when running for the highest office in the land? No, she was welcomed aboard by many in her party who felt she ‘deserved it’ even though facts proclaimed otherwise. Where is the fairness?

Mr. Trump, there are persons you’ve seen and with whom you have spoken who are equal to this man in their experience. They have fewer aspersions on their integrity. If another can be found, please choose him rather than a man who has taken his oath so lightly. Please, waste no time in twisting arms. We’ve got to move on to the ass kicking.

He’s a sitting (standing??) duck for honey traps. Why would we want our head diplomat to follow his Anthony over his brain?

Thank you for that much clearer description of what happened to him.

But in his position he did hook up in a pretty bad way. It would have been better for his country if he had NOT followed his penis: he made that decision to risk it. He could have shown his biographer that info if he never touched her, and wouldn’t have been caught in this situation. He could also have chosen to divorce or separate from his wife FIRST and then live as a single guy, showing decency and caring. His poor homely wife was broadsided and in public.

So he’s still a man who puts hot orgasms ahead of duty. There are classier ways to get your hot sex and still respect your duty.

Agreed. We’re not even really sure of Petreaus’ politics. Why he should be considered for the top cabinet position is beyond me.

” There are classier ways to get your hot sex and still respect your duty.”

Actually, there are not really better ways to get sex when you are deployed for years of your life into a war zone.

Prostitution? Security risk in the extreme.

Wife cannot visit, you cannot leave (well maybe once or twice a year).

Actually, he established one of the safest and most discrete ways to have any sex.

It is a lot easier to criticize someone who has sex while deployed, than it is to be celibate for years out of the prime of your life.

He chose a life without his wife around. I guess if she accepted that he’d be having affairs, that is one way to do it. And she could have affairs too then. But if they were supposed to be faithful, then he should have separated from the wife first.

I know, I know, these things happen. It is not good for man or woman to be alone. Nevertheless, he did not have to do what he did. He wasn’t raped. And he could have separated with one call to his lawyer and proceeded with his hot biography sex. These days, no one expects a single person to eschew a sex life.
