AR-15 vs AK-47 Live Fire Barrel Test
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 11/22/2016 | AV Loan

Posted on 11/22/2016 10:54:14 AM PST by w1n1

The debate goes on between these two famous guns. The folks from AK47 Local Union did a live-fire barrel test between a Daniel’s Defense AR-15 against the classic Vepr AK-47.

These two guns have gone head-to-head on battlefields across the world early in the "cold war" to current terrorist threats, but how will they fare in this range competition? See the results here.

Diversity is our strength. Why not both?

The Daniel Defense has a hammer-forged barrel, so should do well. Not sure if the light weight model has a typical barrel profile or not. I’d expect the AK to run cooler since it is piston driven, but apparently that is not the case. Still, the AK is considerably less expensive than the DD.

If the Marine Corps replaces the M4 with the HK416, the M4/M16 era will come to an end after a 52 year run.

As a burgeoning dictator in waiting, and given the troops to hand, I will choose the Kalashnikov. Easier to field strip and clean, runs well even if dirty, 7.62 ammo is cheap. Yes in a distance competition it is less accurate, but at 600 yards it’s good enough.

I would think the 7.62x39 is really dropping @600 yards. 5.45 or even (gasp!) 5.56 AK would be my choice at that range.

I’d like to see a test between the AK and the DD5 308. A little bigger, but closer to same size.

You are probably right on that. But I want stopping power. Have to have my troops fight closer in, I guess. Wastage rate will up a bit but ,I’ll use the cannon fodder first.

In that case they should test one of the .308 AK variants so they’d use similar ammo (bullet weight should be appropriately matched to barrel twist rate of course).

Whatever happened with the FN SCAR? I thought it was supposed to be the hot ticket for a future M4 replacement.

Our military planners are always looking for the “One Size Fits All” Infantry rifle that will serve just as well in the bamboo thickets of Southeast Asia as will in the mountains of the Middle East, and it’s just not going to happen.

If I had my druthers I would equip my army with the M-14, semi auto only.

A Kalashnikov at 600 yards? Are you trying to hit a barn?

AR pattern for me. Lighter, more accurate, easier to mount your optics or sights of choice.

Both fine weapons. How long before the “M4 is crap” crowd show up?

Bullet drop for the 7.62 x 39 at 600 yards is +42 inches below the point of aim. 5.56 NATO is somewhere in the 19 inch range.
