I guess the difference is that your references are based on delusions by Carville that a Party that had zero new ideas/offers would benefit like it did when Johnson's "Great Society" set up the gravy train.

I'm not under any delusions that things will magically change but the time and circumstances is so much different than anything before it - our side actually has many substantial agenda items that could have a widespread and visceral effect on politics for a while to come.

Sometimes even us pragmatists like to sigh out a hopeful tune....

In that context, IMHO election day 2018 will be critical. Half (25 out of 48) of non-Republican senators will be up for reelection then. And only 8 Republican senators.

This implies that either

Because, “reversion to the mean.” Too many seats to defend in ’20 and ’22, if you can’t even come within shouting distance of a 50-50 split in ’18.

Ten incumbent Democrats from states won by Trump will be up for reelection in ’18. And 15 others, as well. Republicans absolutely must pick up several seats in ’18. Eight should not be too much to hope for, and that would be filibuster-proof (without accounting for RINO problem . . . )

In the next 2 years Republicans must seriously work to wrong-foot those ten most vulnerable Democrat senators . . .

Agreed - it means that we need to think seriously about donating to our side of the aisle no matter what State we reside in.
