September 2016 Continues Record Breaking Gun Sales/NICS Background Checks
Gun Watch ^ | 4 October, 2016 | Dean Weingarten

In September, 2016 continued on its record breaking pace to become the year with the most gun sales ever.  September has maintained the pace from August. Both months broke records, but by a lower percentage than the rest of 2016.  The 2016 NICS checks are far ahead of those for 2015, the previous record holder.

In 2015, the total NICS checks for the year were 23,141,970 .  In 2015, through September, they were 15,607,587

1,992,219 checks were done in September, 2016 making 19,872,694 checks done for 2016 so far.

2016 is about two months ahead of the 2015 record.  It is 27.3% ahead of where 2015 was at this time.  If this pace continues, 2016 will end up with 29.5 million background checks for the year.

There are 15 years where we can compare the NICS background checks to the actual addition to the private firearms stock, as reported to the ATF.  During that period there have been about .6 firearms added for each NICS check.

The NICS checks are done for more than new firearms.  They are done for used firearms as well. They are done when trade ins are sold at gun shops or when used guns are sold at gun shows.  NICS checks are done for gun carry permits, which are also breaking records every month.  In most states, once a person has a carry permit, further NICS checks are not required to purchase a firearm.

We will not know exactly how many guns have been added to the private stock in 2016 until late January, 2018.  The numbers will not be reported to the ATF until the end of 2016. The ATF is required by law to hold them from public view for a year, to prevent proprietary information from being released.

It is easy to see how one manufacturer would like to know exactly how many guns of certain models and calibers their competitors are selling.

Given the NICS numbers, there will probably be 18 million guns added to the private stock in 2016.  That would increase the total number to 406 million private firearms in the United States.

The private firearm stock in the United States will have increased by nearly 100 million firearms, or 30%, during the two terms of the Barack Obama presidency.

To reach that number there will need to be 10 million more NICs checks done in 2016 from, 1 October to 31 December.  In 2015, 7.53 million NICS checks were done in that period.

That would be a remarkable achievement.

It is not clear why the rate of NICS checks slowed in August and September.  They are still records.

Many indicators show a soaring and  diverse level of gun ownership.  Carry permits are burgeoning, approaching 15 million and more.  Gun ownership among women and minorities is at an all time high.

Who would have thought that President Barack Obama would be the record setting, all time champion, gun salesman?

I think Obama. He has the long running record, and he set Hillary up and supports her.

I can not believe that statement. Where does it come form? Those that I talk to do not do a background except to buy a gun. It seems to me that most people find a gun they want and then get a background check. I never saw someone get a background check to see if they could get a gun. With more women buying guns I can not see them starting a gun purchase, get a background check and backing out after the check. Criminals and black market do not do background checks.

The ATF keeps records of guns manufactured, guns imported, and guns exported.

The FBI keeps records of background checks. Background checks are done for carry permits, and they are done for used guns.

The number of new guns is calculated as gun manufactured for the U.S. market, not including for the military, plus imports, minus exports.

When that number is compared to FBI background checks recorded by NICS, it comes to .6 new guns for each background check.

The ATF keeps records....

And I have as much faith in them as I do unemployment numbers, immigration numbers, even global warming. How many guns come across the border with illegal immigrants especially terrorists? How many guns are made outside of atf scrutiny? I need to go by the old adage “believe none of what you hear and half of what you see”, more so on the internet.

Reminds me, I'm looking for something in .308/7.62 NATO to add to my collection. Around the $1000 range. Atlantic has treated me well so I've narrowed it down to either the SA-58 Voyager:

Or the PTR-91 A3R

Already good to go in the AK and AR family groups.

What say ye all?

I prefer the SA-58, as a variation of the FN. Magazines are plentiful and cheap.

I have owned variants of both types. I liked the feel and handle of the FN type variants over the HK type.

Just my personal preference. Both have served well in many military establishments.

In most states, once a person has a carry permit, further NICS checks are not required to purchase a firearm.

I am out of state but have a Utah CCW. When I showed it to a dealer in Utah he still did a NICS check, saying that all the permit did was say it was OK for an out of stater to buy a long arm there.

Realize you're not the author, but it's only about 20 states, and some of those have caveats, mostly related to date of issue. Though California restricts it to Entertainment Firearms Permit only. Whatever that is.

Thanks for the link. Good information.

I looked through it. By my count, a permit qualifies as an alternative to the background check in 25 States, not counting California he “entertainment firearms permit” likely only applies to the movie industry.

25 states may not be most. It is 50%, which is pretty significant.

Also, that list is over two years old, so there may have been a state or two added over that period.

Do they verify the concealed carry permit or take it at face value? If it has to be verified I’d speculate that’s more time consuming than NICS. Recordkeeping, who knows.

I have never had them verify the permit. They would write down the permit number.

Interesting. Much better system for the purchaser, though the permit could be revoked. However crime rates for permit holders are so much lower than even law enforcement it’s not much of a risk.

An NICS check is done when you apply for a CCW license. It’s also done when a used gun is bought. The stat is the ratio of NEW guns bought divided by total NICS checks.
