Shallow earthquakes in populated areas are bad news.
Christchurch, New Zealand suffered a shallow earthquake in recent years which killed more than 300 people and did tremendous damage.
In June of 1925, a shallow earthquake near Santa Barbara, Calif., destroyed the downtown business district and did heavy damage to the towers of the Santa Barbara Mission.
This Italian earthquake is serious. Reports of deaths are already coming in.
