Real Viking Ship Completes North Atlantic Crossing

The world’s largest viking ship has arrived in North America after crossing the North Atlantic Ocean on a journey from its homeport in Haugesund, Norway.

The Viking ship, named Draken Harald Hårfagre, set sail from Norway with its approximately 32 crew members in late April and made stops in Iceland, Greenland and Newfoundland, Canada, before making its way through the Saint Lawrence Seaway to Toronto for the Tall Ships Challenge Great Lakes 2016 festival this weekend.

Future stops for the Viking ship include Chicago, Green Bay and Duluth, before heading to U.S. east coast with stops in New York City and finally Mystic Seaport in Mystic, Connecticut in October.

Draken Harald Hårfagre is actually not a replica, rather a real-life Viking ship built based ancient Norwegian boat building techniques dug up from the history books and archaeological findings. Construction was completed in 2014 and it is now heralded as the world’s largest Viking ship ever built in modern times.

Absolutely going to see this ship... last year I went to see L’Hermione Lafayettes ship, which was meticulously reconstructed.

"Anyhow of finding its itinerary of stops. Would be cool to watch it go through the Soo Locks in Sault Sainte marie on its way too of back from Duluth."(sic)

It's only 2PM in the afternoon.
You're drunk already?

In other words, a replica.

They need eyes painted on the bow so they can see in foggy weather.

Vikings figured out how to do it a long time ago.

Some folks, not so much, ever.

I bet that was one helluva ride!!
I would loved to have been one of people making the trip.

Something to talk about for years.

From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!"

Been on the open ocean many times. Don’t know how to get seasick.

Don’t care for being on deck when there’s lightning crackling overhead, though.

My only experience on the ocean was on a small fishing boat on the North Sea out of Whitby, North Yorkshire. I loaded up on Dramamine starting the night before so I was okay. Even ate a ham & cheese sub on the way out of the harbor.

Some of the other guys weren’t so lucky. But they were amusing.
