In Just One Week, New York State Destroyed Both Airbnb and Uber

There is a meme circulating startup circles right now around the world. The meme says that the largest taxi service in the world doesn’t own a single taxi, the largest hotel and lodging company doesn’t own a single hotel, and the largest restaurant delivery business doesn’t own a single restaurant.

This week Big Government NY destroyed two out of three of them.

The legislature started with a bill that was supposed to repeal one of the thousands of archaic socialist laws that hinder free market capitalism in the state, this particular law being one once lobbied by the insurance companies and what has held uber back from coming to New York State after all this time.

New York State is in the minds of the rest of America the epitome of big government over reach and the ideas free market or capitalism are no longer really practiced here.

Years of socialist leaning regulation has left large cities throughout the state with empty downtown streets or rotten buildings.

Read up on the city-states of the ancient world and you’ll see what our nation is devolving into.

Well, AirBnB is actually having other troubles as well. They are currently under going a class lawsuit investigation into discrimination. It seems some operators are not willing to rent out their “bed and breakfast” to just anyone. Many operators do screen people seeking to book at their B & B.

I looked in to doing this myself as I have several empty spare bedrooms. Having a respectable guest, in my college town, basically “share” my home. Yes, it could be risky as you are inviting strangers into you home!

A few years back I inquired with my city if I could convert my property to an actual B&B, they declined my request. So I honestly am not sure how people in general can get away with offering a room for rent. Essentially a commercial enterprise in a residential area.

Not commercial, just sharing of spare capacity and costs...Maybe if the transactions were in BitCoins.

This is not Big Government vs. Entrepreneurial Start Up. This is Big Government vs. Big Business. If someone or some small group of people had decided a while ago to create something in their city like Uber or AirBnB they would have been out of business in weeks due to violating one or more local laws.

The only reason that Uber and AirBnB are still operating is because they are so HUGE. They got a large amount of money to start up in multiple cities all at once. That allowed them to generate enough income that they could fight lawsuits and bribe politicians in the cities that fought back.

So I will cry no tears for Uber or AirBnB. When Uber starts replacing real drivers with autonomous vehicles they will have even less support. And if they come up with a Roomba like device that can entirely clean an apartment, then AirBnB rooms will mostly be let out by major corporations owning scads of apartments.

Trouble brewing. The union members are supporting Trump in overwhelming numbers (excepting public employee unions) while the supporters of the AirBnB and Uber phenomena are social liberals who love Obama. This could get ugly for the Democrats.

Commercial? If you are receiving money or compensation for sharing the room it is commercial, especially if you are doing so through a business.

I like limited government. Apparently, in a nation of 330 million people, it’s really hard to have limited government. Too much money. Too much power. Too much secrecy.

I support local government. States, or counties or cities — I’m not picky. But I REALLY don’t want any government to control $10B or more in an annual budget. It’s just asking for trouble.

The move is to kill competition. Taxi medallions in New York City sell for more than half a million dollars and that outrageous price is due to a government maintained shortage of cabs. Needless to say the fleet owners of these madallions have the money to buy politicians and maintain their monopoly.

My understanding is that if you take in a long-term housemate, there’s not much they can do about it, within reason. Or two.

“Having a respectale guest, in my college town, basically “share” my home.”

Living in a college town I’d think it would be easy for you to find a roommate or two and even in today’s messed up world I’m sure you could find someone respectable.

Just about all the RAT controlled cities have ganged up to suck tax dollars out of the rest of the nation to pay for their welfare scams.
