Three women enjoying a quiet dinner in Santa Monica Thursday night went from their cheese platter to heroically thwarting an alleged date rape attempt.

* snip *

Ulrich describes how she, along with friends Monica Kenyon and Marla Saltzer, were dining at the restaurant Fig at the Fairmont when Kenyon spotted a man at a nearby table putting something in his date's drink without her knowing. Instead of sitting quietly, Ulrich approached the woman in the bathroom and told her what Kenyon had seen.

They took action to prevent a rape. If one of my daughters was the intended victim I’d definitely called the intervention heroic.

Okay, I read the post and all the comments, and I have a question. Now understand that I'm a 64 year old guy so maybe I'm not up on the latest societal norms, but how did this guy think he was going to benefit from his actions? I mean, she works with him! Was she going to go into work and say, "Nice night. I'm sorry I passed out from my glass of wine. By the way, have you seen my underwear?" The thought doesn't cross her mind that maybe her 'best friend' drugged her and had his way with her unconcious body? Does everyone just pass this off these days?

A puzzled Wingy

I recall one of those “hidden camera” things with this.

The one time a sexy lady did it to the guy’s drink. The gal saw somebody see her and she winked and did a “shoosh” sign with her finger to her lips. IIRC, nobody said anything to the guy when he got back.

Then they did it with a normal looking guy doing it to a normal looking gal’s drink. Several people went up to the gal to warn her.

Yeah, this happens all the time to guys but I guess it’s not worth helping when it happens to a guy. I had a friend that got drugged in a bar by some guys he met there and then rolled. He wasn’t so mad about losing the money but only for the needless beating his muggers gave him.

Sorry. We will disagree on this.

how did this guy think he was going to benefit from his actions?

He's probably too stupid to have thought about negative consequences.

Instead, he probably thought: Once I get her semi-conscious, then rape her, maybe she won't remember anything. Or maybe she'll think it was all a dream. Or maybe it will all somehow work out, and then she'll fall in love with me.

At any rate, he'll have a lot of free time to rethink his actions here. Because he's going to get serious prison time here.

Right, some other virtue, but heroism involves risk to life or safety. Maybe if the perp saw her...

No he won’t; not in California.
I am a native and I still live here; if all the women down there in So. Cal. are lucky, he might get 30 days community service and a fine.
My state has been overrun and ruled by lunatics and criminals for the last 30 years.

Great job. But ... heroic?? They were never in danger.

They might have been mistaken. After all, only one of them actually saw the action. She might have been wrong.

In which case, if I were the jury (in the civil case that would result), they'd be on the hook for any negative consequences experienced by the guy.

Sorry, but that's how it works.

The charge wouldn't be possession. He actually tried to use the drug.

I don't know CA law but he could be charged with intent to commit.

He could be nailed for what he did, but Prop 47 removes the first line of defense against date rape drugs.

By the way, I understand how you feel (especially if you have daughters) we disagree on the level of risk and involvement.

I simply don’t think doing what is right with no risk to themselves qualifies someone to be labeled a hero. That’s all.
