Winston Churchill's Doctor's Note Allowing Him to Drink "Unlimited" Alcohol in Prohibition America

Winston Churchill arrived in the United States for a long (40 stop) lecture tour in December of 1931, and shortly after his arrival was struck by a car while crossing the street.

A cab carried him off to Lenox Hill Hospital where he was treated for a deep gash to the head, a fractured nose, fractured ribs, and severe shock. He spent two weeks in the hospital, where he also developed pleurisy.

Six weeks after the accident, he resumed an reduced 14-stop version of the tour, despite his fears that he would prove unfit. Dr. Otto Pickhardt, Lenox Hill’s admitting physician, came to the rescue by issuing Churchill the Get Out of Prohibition Free Pass, as pictured below. The text:

…the post-accident convalescence of the Hon. Winston S. Churchill necessitates the use of alcoholic spirits especially at meal times. The quantity is naturally indefinite but the minimum requirements would be 250 cubic centimeters.

Wow - this would apply to so many of us:

When my father had a cancerous kidney removed years ago, the doctor had the hospital stock a six-pack of beer in their refrigerator for him so that he could keep his other kidney functioning well.

A minimum of a half pint a day works for me too.

went to my Dr. a few years ago for my annual. Going over my numbers he was curious about why my cholesterol had gone up. I said I was baffled too as I was on a no alcohol diet. He proclaimed that red wine has been shown to reduce cholesterol so I should consider a moderate, like 5oz of red wine a day, resumption.

Got home wife asked how the visit went. I said fine, my Dr said I should drink red wine.

Just out of curiosity, what were the results on your next exam? Cholesterol up or down?

God the Father of mercies: I thank you that Churchill wasn’t killed by that car.

Good for Churchill. Prohibition was forced on America by radical progressives seeking to build their utopia. Alcohol is not forbidden in the Bible, however no drunkard will go to heaven.

Wife is a ICU nurse. Most hospitals she has worked at keep alcohol on hand so that patients don’t go through DT’s at the wrong time, like when recovering from surgery.

I cannot recall the actual numbers but they did go down a tad overall over six months but the difference was not significant.

Since then I have lost a good deal of weight and my numbers are down markedly.

When I was in grad school I had to go in for a checkup. Doc looks at my blood work and say, “Did you quit drinking?” I told her I had been so busy working on my stuff I simply didn’t have time for anything else. She told me to start drinking again. Well, she’s the doctor.

More than likely Churchill was a functional drunk. Anyone who grew up with one in their family knows what that is, and knows when they're not drunk they can't function.

Jesus took the sin upon himself; murderers who accept Him and His sacrifice can go to Heaven but drunks can not?

Practicing murderers will not go to heaven. Practicing drunks will not go to heaven...1 Cor 6:9. Repentance and turning from sin through what Jesus did for us is the only way to be saved

Too bad all that drinking cut his life short, he only made it to 90.

Bessie Bradock (To Churchill): “Sir, you are drunk.”

Churchill (To Bessie): “And you, Bessie, are ugly. But I shall be sober in the morning, and you will still be ugly.”

Then why did God create fruit and yeast and, when fruit falls to the ground, allow fermentation of the fruit for animals enjoyment? God made us in his image so God must like beer, wine, and whisky. Anything not done in moderation is a sin and a mistake be it wine, women, or song.
