Human Extinction Isn't That Unlikely

“A typical person is more than five times as likely to die in an extinction event as in a car crash,” says a new report.

Nuclear war. Climate change. Pandemics that kill tens of millions.

These are the most viable threats to globally organized civilization. They’re the stuff of nightmares and blockbusters—but unlike sea monsters or zombie viruses, they’re real, part of the calculus that political leaders consider everyday. And according to a new report from the U.K.-based Global Challenges Foundation, they’re much more likely than we might think.

In its annual report on “global catastrophic risk,” the nonprofit debuted a startling statistic: Across the span of their lives, the average American is more than five times likelier to die during a human-extinction event than in a car crash.

But of course. And they’ll also resuming mentioning the names of the military dead overseas, which was of paramount importance (*cough*) to the media under Dubya, but mysteriously ended after 1/20/2009. I hope Trump calls out these Fifth Columnists the moment he takes office for the traitors and frauds they are.

I’ve never seen that claim before.

It seems dubious to me, since the average surface temperature has varied by more than one or two degrees up or down, many times, including I think within the Anthropocene, without “killing everyone on the planet from the equator to the poles.”

The only near extinction event in all history is the Flood. There will be no other God will step in before then.

Mat 24:22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.

I’m aware of that “Official” death toll. What I reported on is what the Newspaper said in 1956.

the average American is more than five times likelier to die during a human-extinction event than in a car crash.

It all depends on weather you are the one in the car.

The actual number of human beings is not “growing exponentially”. Whole continents now have below-replacement fertility rates.

Do you have any numbers to back you up? Links, please.

Dsrtsage, at one point you said you were talking about a one or two degree rise in temperature. At another point you said it would be like being in an oven.

I don’t see how you can mean both at the same time

Short of reliquifying the lithosphere or creating hostile AI humans aren’t going extinct anytime soon. We’re actually pretty resilient as a population.

I have heard of being in an oven. On the other hand, I’ve never heard of 78°F being lethal while 77°F is only considered a pleasant afternoon.
