The difference between modern Russia and the Soviet Union, is the influence of the Russian Orthodox Church.

To a minimal degree. If Russia are such Christian soldiers, why are they in the Middle East fighting for Iran in the first place? Why is Russia about to screw over their Christian Armenian allies, in favor of Muslim Azerbajan?

Stay out of it and hopefully Russia will kick their asses.

Do you want to put money on that?

First of all Turkey and Iran are allies, despite any skirmish. It's not in either of their interests to go to war. Russia desperately needs to see oil to Turkey.

Secondly, Russia would be badly overextended. Putin is good at bluffing, but he'd make a serious mistake getting involved in a war in the Middle East.

Does Russia cutting off Turkey’s supply line count?

The last two days saw government troops and their Lebanese and Iranian allies fully encircle the countryside north of Aleppo and cut off the main supply route linking the city - Syria’s largest before the war - to Turkey. Ankara said it suspected the aim was to starve the population into submission.

They are cutting of the Assad opponent’s supply line, not Turkeys. Russia and Turkey may disagree on Assad, but it probably won’t move beyond that.

What a coincidence. The orthodox church is the reason the Pope wanted Hitler to invade in the first place.

Historically, they haven't always been, but since the fall of the USSR in the early 90s, they have. They are among each other's top trading partners. Russia is Turkey's top source of energy, and the source of a big chunk of their tourism.

Those times have/are changing under Erdogan. Turkey is turning away from secularism to Islamism under their current leader, who some say he has aspirations of becoming the head of a new Islamic Caliphate.

Today, Turkey's government under Erdogan is no ally of Russia's government under Putin.

I just seems Russia, with it’s population and military would make them a very formidable opponent.

Russia is an ally with Saudi Arabia, too.

Disagree. Watch for this to become even more apparent as things continue to deteriorate and the drums of war get louder.

I will interpret: the authors focus on eschatology shapes what he reports and how he interprets events to the extent that nothing the author writes is credible.

Your argument is ridiculous. Putin’s government is a close ally of Iran. Iran has a far more extreme Islamic government than Turkey. Russia is fighting in Syria on behalf of Iran. So your idea that Putin is opposed to be Islamic nations is just plain wrong.

You are trying to make Putin some kind of Christian hero. That is a misguided effort.

Putin ultimately wants to control Iran, it’s been a Russian goal for a long time, so he’s playing nice with the Islamists now to try to gain more of a foothold in Iran.

"the authors focus on eschatology shapes what he reports"

You interpret wrongly then. Go to his site and read some of his reporting on the atrocities committed in the name of 'Allah'.

It's declining population with a male life expectancy of 59? And battered by low oil prices, they would want to lose one of their biggest oil markets in Turkey?

What would Russia get out of this war? The only reason they are in Syria is to save Assad for Iran and their own use of a port there.

So your idea that Putin is opposed to be Islamic nations is just plain wrong.

You're attempting to simply something which is complex, not to mention dynamic and ever evolving. Russia is getting drawn into this regardless if it's against its better judgement/wishes or not.

The turmoil is caused by two existing factions of Islam struggling for dominance as well as competing petroleum producers and consumers - of which both Russia and the West are large stake holders.

Alliances come and go as the situation demands. Russia has aligned itself with Syria/Iran, putting differences of state religions aside in furtherance of more important considerations.

I never said Putin would oppose ALL Islamic nations in this. I was only putting an emphasis on different the different Islamic factions (Shias/Sunnis) involved, for better understanding of how current alliances came about.

At some point, I see the Shias/Sunnis either uniting or one gaining dominance over the other. I also see this leading to a worldwide conflagration (i.e. WWIII).
