Representative Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY) (D-Bronx) and 91 other Democrats sent a letter to Obama this week asking him to go even further with his executive actions and ban the import of "assault weapons."

Engel wrote the letter, in which he claimed "a mass shooting on average each day this year in this country." He described Obama's executive action to expand background checks as "important," then asked Obama to use the language of the Gun Control Act of 1968 to stop "assault weapons" from entering the country....

There needs to be a list of these people posted, so we know who to point fingers at when something bad happens.

It's also worth mentioning that Bill Ruger, founder of Ruger Firearms, had pushed for this ban as well. The company also never sold 20 and 30 round Mini-14/30 factory mags to civilians while he was alive.

Fortunately, the company changed policy with the passing of Bill Ruger, who apparently thought the second amendment was about hunting.

Already been done by George Bush Sr. back in 1989.

Yeah, “banning assault weapons” makes the liberal feel good about themselves,

but they have a hard time defining what they mean by “assault weapons”.

One year, a lib-in-law was decrying why “semi-autos” were available to the public, and I asked him to describe how this “semi-auto” that he was lamenting functioned and why that was worth banning.

I’ll give him props, he knew he couldn’t BS through it, so admitted he didn’t know.
After explaining that the scary guns he was referring to functioned no differently than a deer rifle,
he still wanted a “scary gun ban”, but somehow exclude the deer rifle.

I guess if we had an AR-15 “wood edition”, they’d be ok with it.

Back in 1962, Thomas J Dodd and Emanuel Cellar called for the registration of all handguns, “Long guns would not be affected!” and ban on the import of 5 shot bolt action army surplus rifles, claiming they were used in crime.

It was found they were calling for a ban on army surplus rifles to protect Winchester, Remington and Savage bolt rifle makers from cheap foreign competition.

Most poor rural people could not afford a high dollar Winchester or Remington so they would go to the hardware store, pick up a $5-$10 dollar army rifle and buy three or four rounds for deer hunting.

They got their ban back in 1968, and crime did NOT go down, because the law was not designed to prevent crime, even though LBJ said it was.

“Today we begin to disarm the criminal and the careless and the insane. All of our people who are deeply concerned in this country about law and order should hail this day.”-Lying Lyndon Johnson

Bill Ruger was so worried that a ban would be passed he redesigned his semi-autos to become lever actions.

If it is banned, how is that NOT an infringement? If the options are narrowed by the import ban, is that NOT a restriction of choice?

Yeah, yeah, DEMs vs. brains/logic...

You’re going to debate the definition of ‘assault rifle’? First debate the meaning of ‘infringe’; then allow the same to voting, abortion, 1st Amendment, etc.

THEN, as their single brain cell collapses...

Ruger wanted to ban his competition so everybody would have to buy Mini-14s. He did not win a lot of friends with this attitude.

Correct. At the time I bought a stainless Mini-14 and a stainless Mini-30. Paid just under $300 each plus tax. At the the gun shows during Reagan years I had picked up some Norinco paratrooper SKS carbines NIB for $98.00. They shot every bit as good the Minis.

Plus Ruger never sold the factory folding stock models and hi-cap mags to us peons.

Mini-14s were never known for accuracy, even after they put some decent sights on them. I finally ended up with a folder with the later sights, which is fun to shoot, but not very accurate. I read they have made some changes for accuracy, but haven’t shot a late one.

Part of the problem was the skinny barrel on the old ones. Not very rigid so it would vibrate like crazy and throw your shots off. I found I could improve accuracy by just adding a flash suppressor.

Then someone came out with the Accu-Strut which stiffens the barrel even more. Gives it an M-14 look:
This one isn't mine but you get the idea:

The newer ones have a heavier barrel which should help. Haven't shot a new one either.

Never say that before. I may gamble on one. It looks cool, at least. I already have the flash suppressor on mine because it has a better sight post.
