Vanity - What is Your Favorite Inspirational Song?
Vanity | 21 Nov 2015

When things begin to get you down or the world overwhelms, it usually helps to listen to music that inspires you. A song I've recently found very inspirational, among many - even though I don't understand the words - is a song from the sound track of the documentary Patterns of Evidence

Freedom: The Dawn Of Exodus

On November 22, 1873, the British sailing freighter Loch Earn collided with the French steam-sailer Ville du Havre, a passenger liner, which went down with most of its passengers and crew. The wreck inspired Horatio Spafford, who lost most of his family in the wreck, to write the hymn "It Is Well with My Soul," whose tune name is Ville du Havre. Soon afterwards, Phillip Paul Bliss, who wrote the music to which the hymn was set, died in a train wreck near Ashtabula, Ohio.

I discovered this remix of Lean On Me by J2 this morning. While not everyone is a fan of “movie trailer music”, it moved me to tears. And that’s not easy to do.

I like it to. Lean On Me is a fav of mine, and many of my favorite songs are trailer music - especially "epics" as you tagged them. :-)

I can cycle something like the trailer to Patterns of Evidence: Exodus - Full Trailer in the background for inspiration while working on something in the foreground like this post - even now that's what I'm doing. lol

Somehow the voice-over enhances that song. Great music lends to creativity, fluid motion of body, inspiration, ..., at least for me. Whereas I can't listen to say an audible book and do any work that requires much thinking at all. Not even ridding ridding my motorcycle or doing anything much more than driving a car or staring into space - one might as well be reading the book instead of listening to it.

Your version of Lean On Me, another keeper. I have an app total recorder that works great for making mp3s out of streaming media - even videos. I mosttimes just save the Youtube link, unless it's a keeper.

Thanks!

Ha, that’s a pretty unusual piece! Irish, bad-ass, with a bit of heavy-metal thrown in - I like it!

Awesome! Some great listening for a winding road on fast bike or car. Some music even causes me to drive too fast. lol

It’s a very unusual song, both musically and lyrically. The lyrics are dreamy, poetic, iconic and illuding to lore.

That would be Leonard Cohen, I'm Your Man, Cohen. deep and painfully honest. Suzanne ended up as a homeless woman near Sunset Beach, CA, last I heard. And then compare two songs about Janis Joplin, Cohen's Chelsea Hotel (he would later apologize for being so honest) with Garcia's fabulous acoustic verson of Bird Song (bearing in mind that Grateful Dead member Ron "Pigpen" McKernan also was a lover of Janice Joplin's for a time). .

In any case, all three of these deserve a hearing, so to speak.

Yes. Very sad. My major in seminary was Church Music and one class covered the history of many of the great old hymns. Some I’ve forgotten; some are unforgettable — like this one.

Also the story behind “Does Jesus Care”.
