Survival Prepping - How Much Ammo is Enough?
AShooting Journal ^ | 10/20/2015 | asj

Is 1,000 Rounds Enough or 10,000 Rounds?

It’s a very common question posed by survivalists, preppers, and others preparing for the potential likelihood of a SHTF event. Among all the lists of plans for your survival, things to gather, store, gear to buy, and skills to acquire are the huge concerns of security, self and family protection, guarding your property, and just maybe staying alive.

Survivalists and preppers are gun people. They believe in acquiring a variety of firearms for defensive purposes as well as offensive tactics if things take a turn for the absolute worst. For these purposes a host of weaponry may be stocked and used regularly in preparation for whatever might come down the pike.

The big question often posed by survivalists and preppers is exactly how much ammunition to keep on hand. There are many factors to take under serious consideration as you build up your prepping strategies.

First, how many firearms do you have that you will have to feed? Most will have multiples of handguns, rifles of various kinds, and likely several shotguns, too. These are a lot of guns to stock ammo for, so choose wisely, and above all try to consolidate where possible.

Read the rest of the story here, so how much ammo are you all stocking for when the SHTF?

Enough to wear out every barrel you own.

I am not a prepper, but my question is where are you keeping it all? I mean what happens if you are away from home and can’t make it back. Seems foolish to keep it all in one place.

I’m sure this is discussed elsewhere, so just wondering aloud.

The only time you can have too much is if you are drowning or on fire.....

Better have spares for your firearm, like firing pin, the ‘jesus’ pin (for ARs) batteries for your illuminated sights and tac lights.

Best to have multiples in the same caliber.

AND the cleaning kits/ armorers tools to keep it all operational after real-world abuse/use.

I would postulate either:

1) Lots of ammo

or

2) ammo + lots of brass, primers, powder and reloading equipment.

In a true SHTF situation, guns and ammo will be lying all over the streets.

I hate these survival threads!

Makes me realize I don't have enough of anything.

I know, my fault.

Especially if you plan on shooting that Tula ammo in anything except an AK.

Depending on who or what will be your primary opponent, you might need more and different weaponry than what is discussed in this article.

Learn how to make your own.

Buy powder and lead.

When you run out of ammo, you will still have the ability to barter your labor.

Brass can be reused several times.

There’s cheap ammo, and there is TOO cheap ammo.

IF you are the Russians and you can throw away firearms when the ammo ruins them, then Tula is for you.

Hehe ... use it for barter with folks who don’t know any better/ you don’t like.

You are stuck at a truck stop. Out of cash but need to buy gasoline so you can reach your bugout spot. You approach a truck driver who is filling his tanks.

You have two valuables to offer in exchange for fuel. In one hand you have a gold coin easily worth more than the price of the fuel. In the other hand you have a brick of 22 LR. Which of the two is more likely to be accepted at that moment?

Your question again on how much ammo is enough?

Although I do think there's about a 50% chance things will go terribly wrong, I'm not ready to commit to prepping. It seems the expense, time, and mindset is such that it will consume my life. In that case it's a direct violation of “take no thought for tomorrow...” and “when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, be ye not troubled: for such things must needs be; but the end shall not be yet” etc. Buy ammo when you can reasonably afford it and get a few things that’ll help you get by.

I keep a firearm and some ammo in a locked box in my truck. You would not see it if you were not looking for it.

But, if you are not carrying a firearm, there is really no need for ammo.

Unless you carry a couple hundred 22 lr for barter. If you are that far away from home, and you do not have a gun....leave it in a place on your body where it will be easy for the “wolves” to find.
