Sierra Club’s Aaron Mair Responds to Sen. Ted Cruz’s Attack on Climate Science
EcoWatch ^ | October 9, 2015 | Aaron Mair, Sierra Club

Posted on 10/09/2015 11:18:22 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

This week, Sen. Ted Cruz held a hearing to attack the clean air and clean water safeguards that protect millions of families all across America. Sierra Club President Aaron Mair was there to talk about how communities of color, which are disproportionately affected by pollution and climate disruption, rely on these safeguards to protect them.

A friend to big polluters, Cruz unsurprisingly tried to cover all their talking points. His game? To attack the climate science that shows how carbon pollution from burning fossil fuels is causing climate disruption in the first place while assailing the Clean Power Plan, which would allow us to act on climate disruption and protect people’s health.

Well, Sierra Club Aaron Mair has a few things to share with Sen. Cruz. Check out his response:

(VIDEO-AT-LINK)

Senator Cruz,

There’s an old lawyerly adage that “if you don’t have the law on your side, argue the facts. If you don’t have the facts on your side, pound the table.” You did a very good job pounding the table this week.

This week, you held a hearing on the clean air and clean water safeguards that protect millions of American families. I testified because I wanted to talk about how these safeguards are especially critical for people of color and low-income communities, who are disproportionately affected by pollution and climate disruption.

But, as a friend to big polluters, you derailed the whole hearing with misinformation, claiming there was a “pause” in rising global temperatures—misinformation already debunked by scientists and the non-partisan Politifact.com. You wanted to talk numbers, so here you go:

0: The number of accurate data points you shared when attempting to claim that the climate wasn’t changing. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, average global temperatures have been steadily rising for the last three decades.

97%: The percentage of scientists who agree that the climate is changing and that human activity is the cause.

2015: expected to be the hottest ever recorded.

60 and 30: 60% of African Americans and Latinos reside in communities with a toxic waste site and within 30 miles of a power plant

7: 7 out of 10 African Americans live in areas with air that is unsafe to breathe.

48217: that’s the zip code of the neighborhood in Detroit I just visited—the dirtiest zip code in the nation. There, massive mounds of petroleum coke waste and coal incinerators are within blocks of schools—further evidence that the lack of protections has turned Detroit from the epicenter of opportunity into the epicenter of the Asthma epidemic. Schools and smokestacks do not mix.

90,000: The Clean Power Plan can help us prevent 90,000 asthma attacks in children, save consumers $155 billion on energy in the next decade and create 360,000 new jobs. Energy savings, more jobs, healthy families and safer communities? I think 100% of the American people would go for that.

Aaron Mair of Schenectady, New York, is the president of the Sierra Club’s board of directors. An epidemiological-spatial analyst with the New York State Department of Health, Mair’s experience includes more than three decades of environmental activism and over 25 years as a Sierra Club volunteer leader, where he has worked diligently for environmental justice.

Nuclear power plants are the only ones that don’t pollute in any way.

Beat me by less than a minute. The flip side is that those people who do live more than 30 miles away are considered “disadvantaged” by that, and we’re subsidizing them for their being far from the grid. Similar to those who are far from internet services. And he undoubtedly supports those subsidies.

97%: The percentage of scientists who agree that the climate is changing and that human activity is the cause. – Aaron Mair

That is purely and simply total BS. I listened to this mental midget repeat that phrase (or words similar) at least a half dozen times. He does not know what he is talking about.

I wrote a piece some time ago for my town’s newspaper and debunked that lie. Here is an excerpt:

“Of the 10,250 people asked by a college student in a biased and poorly framed survey, 3,146 responded. Of those, only 157 were real climate scientists and only 77 of them were actually published. Out of the 77 remaining, 75 of them, or 97 percent, answered the questions the way we hoped and they believe that man causes global warming.” “A funny thing happened on the way to the apocalypse

Interesting to note that he didn’t have much of a response when the questions were posed in person... “We at the Sierra Club stand by the 97 percent of scientists...blah, blah, blah.”

I’m aware of that. I didn’t think I needed the /s tag. But, this idiot probably considers them dangerous. Like guns and SUVs, you never know when one might decide to go rogue. (Do I need another /s tag?)

I heard the so-called debate - Mair kept repeating the same talking points over and over and wouldn't address Sen. Cruz's questions.

The GW advocates are becoming more militant, even calling for the death of those who dare to question their lefty climate change agenda:

Grist Magazine writer David Roberts said, When we've finally gotten serious about global warming, when the impacts are really hitting us and we're in a full worldwide scramble to minimize the damage, we should have war crimes trials for these bastards — some sort of climate Nuremberg." Professor Richard Parncutt has called for the execution of prominent "GW deniers." Climate Progress Editor Joe Romm called for deniers to be strangled in their beds. James Hansen, who has headed NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, has likewise called for trials of global warming deniers.

The Sierra Club has been bought off long ago - it is completely irrelevant. Looking the other way while illegal Mexican immigrants trample and trash the delicate native desert environment along the Mexico/California border. Bunch of hypocrites.

Sen Cruz started to correct him on the parroting 97% made up number and I was really upset that he didn’t finish as that “statistic” is easy to debunk.

Just wait until I sell the Austin City council on my Unicorn Milk Power Plant, it will be the perfect combination.

Right from the get-go that idiot reinforces his stupidity. The "old adage" is:

"If the facts are on your side, pound the facts into the table. If the law is on your side, pound the law into the table. If neither the facts nor the law are on your side, pound the table".

And he's too stupid to even realize what he said has lost all its wit.

I heard the interview - it was full of ad hominem attacks, lefty propaganda, bumper sticker slogans and Marxist claptrap.

Yes, it’s all they’ve got- but they’ll turn around and declare a “win” against The System - and the media will agree.

Here’s his impeccable credentials:

“Mair is a graduate of Binghamton University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in History and Sociology and a certificate in Southwest Asia and North Africa Studies”

He set minority advancement back several years when in response to Cruz’s questions he leaned back and let some white guy whisper the answers in his ears.

The white liberal tree huggers thought if they put a coloured boy in as president, the race card would protect them from scrutiny. That Shiite won't fly in the Trump/Cruz administration.

” The Clean Power Plan can help us prevent 90,000 asthma attacks in children, save consumers $155 billion on energy in the next decade and create 360,000 new jobs. “

1. Show me the 90,000 people. Where are they from?
2. Show me the calculations for where the “hard savings” come from.
3. Show me the 360,000 jobs. By category, field of study, state, city, town.

Just provide documented fact and I will become a envirowhacko. If not then STFU.

Unfortunately for the morons known as Climate Scientists who believe the big lie, the antarctic ice coverage keeps growing as the "Earth Warms." You can read the explanation for this insanity below in the article. But more importantly, why would a guy named Hussein work so hard to destroy the American economy by shutting down American coal plants even while evidence shows the Earth is cooling, NOT WARMING.

but scientists say rising sea ice levels are a “mystery”

You can easily answer the Hussein Obama question by asking, What would a terrorist do if he were made President? The answer is everything Hussein Obama is doing.
