If You Have More Than 10 Guns, Does That Make You a Gun Nut?
The Atlantic ^ | October 3, 2015 | James Fallows and others

Posted on 10/04/2015 2:05:12 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

In an item after the Oregon shootings, I quoted a reader from Florida saying that if you owned more than 10 guns yourself, you might be considered to have an “arsenal.” And just now on TV I heard the British father of the Oregon murderer asking why anyone, including his son, would want or need so many guns.

Yesterday I quoted a reader who said, on the contrary, ten or more guns could be a perfectly reasonable collection for perfectly non-threatening citizens to have.

On the “how much is enough” point, responses from two readers. First, on the similarities and differences between “gun nuts” and other types of nuts, a reader argues that there really is something different in how gun owners relate with the rest of us.

Your correspondent argues that you can own ten guns without being a "gun nut", then proceeds to list an inventory that he feels makes his case.

Let's try to approach on different collections. Suppose I owned ten motorcycles of different types. Perhaps a cafe racer, an enduro bike, a big touring bike, and so on. Would that make me a motorcycle nut? Probably. You're a runner (I think). Maybe you own ten or more pairs of running shoes. [JF note: Over the years, yes. And let’s not get into old computers, or types of beer.] I'm sure you can come up with a better list than I can, but I can imagine shoes for street running, dirt running, trail running, training, racing, and so on.

Does that make you a running shoe nut. Yup....

That’s a common point gun grabbers make. But rest assured, if they are successful at whittling us down to muzzle loaders they will take them also. I have a collection of them, with the .58 caliber firing a 600 grain projectile that will literally take someone’s head off. Even a 50 cal round ball rifle is extremely deadly. Point is, any and all guns will be confiscated.

I’m a gun nut and proud of it. If you are going to be a sheepdog, you’d best have the tools for the job.

I've gone airgun crazy because where I live there's no place to shoot real guns that's close.

I bought a 3'x3' 16g sheet of stainless steel for a backstop and I can shoot all day in my backyard and not have to worry about stray bullets going into my neighbor's yard.

I have a safe full of guns I don't use very often. At least this way I get trigger time when ever I want.

“..there were only muzzle loaders and THAT is all we can legally have...*

Well - and cannon.

(I’m sure someone already pointed that out.)

I’m not sure if owning 10 guns make s you a gun nut. Having 10 cars kinda of makes you a car nut. Owning 10 wives kind of makes you a polygamist. Just sayin’

Absolutely agree, my junk knees got through from basic to airborne largely due to the support of instructors, sustained by tons of ACE bandages.
Sadly, some of the wacko's also got through due simply to numbers and workload.

PS: I own an example of the Mossberg .22 shown on the BSA handbook; they built great target .22s and are probably still cheap to own.

I had the Marlin Model 60 for decades until my first wife forced me to sell it. You’ll notice she’s no longer my spouse.

Oh! So you’re not only a gun nut, but a whacko prepper too! (BTW - if we get down to 80 rolls in my household with a wife and two teen girls I make another run!)

My first thought was of chairs, lamps, dishes, cups, etc. Although I did know one old single guy that threw out all of his chairs and dishes except for one.

“Every time I’d let it get to a pile of dirty dishes to wash. I only need one set! And when I had a second chair, visitors would sit and chat.”

I live in the country and can fire whatever I want whenever I want. Still I enjoy shooting airguns just for the fun of it.

They are quieter thus I don’t have to wear my ear muffs. They can be very accurate and powerful enough for small game.

I have no interest in those heavy caliber, powerful airguns but there are models which will kill anything.

For one thing, I burn my trash but before I put empty pressurized spray cans in the fire, I shoot a hole through them with an air gun. It keeps them from exploding.

I could use a .22LR but the air gun is so much cheaper and less bother.

Yeah I used to live on 15 acres and could shoot any gun I wanted. But then we had to move to the suburbs and that freedom was taken away so airguns are my only means of immediate gratification. I even have an air-shotgun for those pests I need to shoot safely without a backstop.

I am a collector (I guess) of Marlin lever guns; I like them. I have one in most calibers but I still have a few to go.

I had a very few concrete rules:
don't mess with my motorcycle
don't mess with my cars
don't mess with my firearms.
Thirty years later I heartily regret omitting my tools from the list.

I must have found your losses. If the goons want my property, they have my address. I will trade at least 1 for 1. I hope to do better but that I’s my minimum. If 100 million gun owners do the same then we win quickly. If 100 million use your approach we lose.

Would you say if you purchase over 1.6 BILLION rounds of ammo you are a tyrant? If your civilian employees in the US have more cartridges, bullets, or rounds than our military in the field, you might be planning something BIG? What say Ye O god Gubbermint?

(

Using that same logic, “freedom of the press” applies only to newspapers since there was no TV, radio, internet at that time.)

The fact that the FCC exists means the 1st amendment is null and void in the statist mindset.
