Police should NOT prosecute people who shoplift from large stores

An administrator at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has suggested that police stop making arrests for shoplifting at “large” stores. They have insurance, lots of money, so let’s think “safety first” and let the thieves do their thing!!!

The gentleman responsible for this remarkable flash of genius is UW-Madison Director of Community Relations, Everett Mitchell. “I don’t think [with] Target or all them other places, them big box stores that have insurance, they should be using justification, the fact that people steal from there as justification to start engaging in aggressive police practices, right?”

Uh, yes. What he said.

Unwilling to be silent after having made a complete ass of himself, Mitchell decided to keep digging with the extraordinary statement that “…community police shouldn’t prioritize enforcing the law, but instead should focus on achieving “safety” as it is defined by a local community, even if that definition includes allowing some stores to be robbed with impunity.”

So people should apparently be permitted to steal anything they can comfortably carry? Would Community Relations Director Mitchell demand hand trucks be provided to the more productive or aggressive thieves in order to avert possible back injury? Safety first, after all.

And it should be the local community that decides how and where police should “prioritize enforcing the law.” Wanna bet the local Cadillac and Lincoln dealers will be assigned a very low policing priority!

Mitchell’s ideas were made public at...

In my jurisdiction many stores let the perps go after the police issue a trespass warning. If they return then they can be arrested for trespass after warning. Then again a lot of stores with good video go ahead and have them arrested anyway.

That could be what Walgreens here is doing, too.

and in reforms to our criminal justice system that address disparities in policing for people of color

Okay, I have a solution for you Mr. Mitchell; tell the people of color to address the disparities of their illegal activity.

> And he used to be an assistant Dane County district attorney? A prosecutor?

they obviously didn't hire him for his brains. I'm guessing an affirmative action hire to fulfill their quotas. He probably got to go to law school on a scholarship that was denied to other more qualified applicants just the same.

The Walmarts around here aren’t allowed to stop shoplifters, either. Never mind that it’s us honest customers who have to pay for those stolen goods.

Yyyyyyyep. Just what I thought, not your average genius but an affirmative-action genius.

“Is there a picture of Everett Mitchel? If so could someone post it?”

Mitchell is shown in a youtube offering in the piece, taking part in a discussion on the proper way to deal with crime.

I agree with him. Shoplifters should be given 10 lashes (plus an additional lash for every $10 in value of the item’s taken) and sent off.

I wouldn’t try it at Wal-Mart. They do have shoplifters arrested...everyday.
Their Loss Prevention team is effective.
My wife’s been with the company over 10 years, and only top level management knows who the LP people are.
Employees are instructed not to interfere with a shoplifter. They are trained to call out a code, on either a walkie-talkie, or the intercom.
LP gets about 90% of them, including employees.
