I used to use 2400 but found it a little too inconsistent from can to can. I too have 2 old model vaqueros 5.5” barrels on regular one Bisley in .45 Colt. My load using IMR 4227 pushes a 250 grain jacketed hollow point to around 1200 fps. More than enough for deer and black bear. I also have a 7.5” barrel Redhawk in .44 magnum. It uses a similar load and pushes a 240 grain bullet to about the same velocities.
BTW the vaq Bisley grips hurt less than the regular vaq grips.
Check this out for data....has data for 3 brands of powder from the Manufacturer
I would say a Buster Cap but a friend has that Alias.
Yep.... my hunting loads are specific but for paper punching or ringing steel economy of resources a gang mold, a few buckets of old wheel weights, a powder thats near universal for handguns one can’t do much better...as cheap.
Hope yer well 100 plus degrees forecast today so will wait for dusk and dawn tomorrow to go harass the local coyote population. Stay Safe !!
W-231 and HP 38 ARE the same powder. Both Winchester and Hodgedon either buy from the same source or are the same company now. I have cans of both and I use interchangeably
You be careful with that stuff. In a couple of years, those pills will be featured on the "1-800-BAD-DRUG" ads ...
Yessir.... I walk past the powder racks at my local gunslingers store and “either or” will get a free ride to my house every time....:o)
Weird as to different labels.... My goal this week it to find out who makes it for who.
The picture is a little blurry (may be my eyes) but looks like homie has the single action cocked and pointing at his weenie.. Might have a new nickname shortly if the societal correction did not happen first.
However, he had been safely using it in his .45 Colt Vaquero (the original, heavy-duty Vaquero, not the "New" Version) for about two years, with no signs of trouble, before I tried it in mine.
I would NOT use this load in Ruger's "New" Vaquero. I have one of those in .357 Mag and it is nowhere near as stout as the older model. The older model is built like a Redhawk (i.e. a tank) so I am not too worried about firing heavy loads from it.
Thanks.
Our club had a $1, hundred year lease on the property from a logging company with a provision that we had to allow public non-member access. That always provided most of the color on the range.
The .45 colt load I described is the maximum I will put through that Vaquero - but I would not use it in any other .45 Colt chambered firearm - especially a rifle.
PS - 3,000 fps from an M1 carbine is not something I am interested in attempting.
The overhead cover for the firing line was corrugated metal. From the office all we saw was the guy silhouetted in a big flash. The bolt went through the overhead. He got away with some gas burns across his forehead. That’s what happens when you fill the case with bullseye pistol powder and compress it with the bullet.
Holy crap. He’s lucky the bolt didn’t pass through his skull via the right eye socket.
