I need some advice on my dog. I had 2 dogs, both rescues for the past 11 years. They were pups together.

Solitare was the best dog in the world. She was a farm lab. No breeding but all character. She was Athletic, loving, smart, funny and exuberant.

I lost her Tuesday to metastatic cancer.

Many breeds, for example the breed I have and prefer GSPs, have rescue organizations that are specific to their breed. They often need fosters for the rescues they recieve while looking for a permanent home for them. Reputable rescues will listen to your situation and pair you with a dog that benefit both you and the recue dog. Good luck to you. Sorry for your loss.

That is a good idea. Neutral territory.

Another possibility might be to get a cat that likes dogs

Females are usually, in my experience, a little more independent. Male dogs seem to demand more affection. Kind of like humans. ;-)

I like both. Its a slightly different experience I think. Big dog/small dog different experience too. But all good! How can you go wrong with a dog.

That’s really tough. Losing one dog and the other grieving.

My experience: I have an older, sort of goofy neutered beta-male dog. Found a puppy dumped by the roadside a few years ago and ended up keeping him. Puppy grew up and is about twice the size of the older male, and can’t stand him. I either keep them apart or monitor them closely.

Both are generally well mannered and get along well with other dogs. No idea why big dog doesn’t like old dog.

I’ve been doing some of that.
There are limits to how hard I can work her due to her creaky joints.
Unfortunately I’m 30 miles from a town .They don’t know what a doggie park is out in the country.

She has never been around other dogs much.
When we lived in town I used to walk them independently.
I used to walk them together until their combined weight could pull me off my feet.
She was good on lead, timid around strange men, good with kids.
Now we are in the country and she doesn’t get the opportunity to see other dogs.
She has always been very good with other dogs in the always packed Vets office.

Understand. And no two dogs are alike. Just don’t expect any new dog you get to “be” Solly. Take him or her for his own traits.

We recently lost our four year old Yorkie mix to lymphoma. He was a perfect dog and this was totally unexpected.

I recommend getting another dog and for this reason. There are many dogs available in the animal shelters and through the internet. I would strongly recommend that the dog be described as house broken, heart worm negative and ideally shots up to date. House breaking can really be a problem so you need to know this up front.

I would opt for about a two year old dog that is fully grown and well behaved. They are available if you look around.

Good luck!

Look at it like this. Your dog’s death may have spared another dog a needless death through euthanasia. I have always looked at it like this although we never lost a dog this young before.

I’m so sorry you lost one so young.
I’m a big believer in rescues.

I love my 14 year old Schnoodle, he is super friendly and active. He has grown up in doggie day care. He loves other dogs. I thought I would get him some company so I went to look at another dog.

She growled at my Sammie who does not have a mean bone in his body. I suddenly had the thought that if I adopted THE WRONG dog, I would make Sam’s Little life Miserable!

So now I have decided against it since he is a senior I do not know if he would survive a big change. And he might be jealous.

PLEASE NOTE!! I have moved several times recently and I purchased a DOG CALMING COLLAR! AND BOY DOES IT WORK! It is made by ADAPTILE! I recommend you read about it and use it as a temporary fix.
