I think the ironic thing, not pointed out in the article IIRC, is:
If Vin Baker had the Starbucks job first, before his basketball fortune, he would not have burned through $100 million dollars in his own lifetime.
DK
She has returned! Sound the trumpets!
I’m astounded anyone noticed I was gone! LOL! Thanks!
If Vin Baker had just had 10% of his NBA pay checks withheld and deposited into a professionally run (not family run) trust fund with the provision that he would have no access to the fund till after he retired, his trust fund would be worth anywhere from $12-15 million at the time of his NBA retirement.
If he just left the money in trust, he would be guaranteed anywhere from $300K to $500K pre tax/pre trust fee annual income for life. If he were to reside in a state with NO state income tax, his annual lifetime take home after tax/after trust fee income would have been around $200K to $350K a year for life. He would not need to work again unless he wanted to.
So how many kids with how many women, is this washed up star paying for?
The article goes on and on, about the players’ vast money wealth, and says little about their lives.
Not all athletes wind up like this guy. I recall working in a commercial real estate office, with a former pro football player. He had completed his degree, and was raising an in tact family in peaceful Orange County.
I believe they felt it was too fast paced for them, and were going back to their Tennessee roots for the sake of their kids.
No joke. From age 13-18, I worked in my dad’s restaurant. At the time I didn’t like it at all. It took me a long time to realize that it was the greatest thing he could’ve done for me. It did infinitely more for me than buying me a car or paying my way through college ever would’ve.
I was in the Navy with a guy like that, too. His dad wanted him to do an enlistment in the military before going off to business school. By looking at his car, his apartment, and his attitude, you'd never guess that he came from a family that had more millions than you do music CDs.
