We’re Making Life Too Hard for Millennials
NY Times ^ | 7-31-2015 | Steven Rattner

Posted on 08/01/2015 6:13:17 AM PDT by Sir Napsalot

TO some, millennials — those urban-dwelling, ride-sharing indefatigable social networkers — are engaged, upbeat and open to change. To others, they are narcissistic, lazy and self-centered. .....

Earning Much Less, Despite More Education

They are faced with a slow economy, high unemployment, stagnant wages and student loans that constrict their ability both to maintain a reasonable lifestyle and to save for the future.

Longer term, rising federal debt payments and increased spending on Social Security and Medicare will inflict a tremendous financial burden on them, threatening their own prospect of receiving promised retirement benefits.

To a considerable extent, that’s the fault of my generation, the baby boomers. We were the children of the Greatest Generation, but we may also be the most irresponsible generation.

(snip)

That’s a daunting challenge that would require revamping federal outlays to emphasize areas like education, infrastructure and research and development. Spending more on these areas would require higher taxes on my generation, which is getting a lot more from government than we are paying into it.

As part of redressing this imbalance, we need to reform the entitlement programs, for example, by reducing Social Security benefits for the highest income Americans. And important steps could be taken to both ease the burden of student debt for those who have already graduated and provide less expensive college opportunities for the rising generation.

Let’s at least start with a greater acknowledgment of the plight of millennials and the role that we — in many cases, their parents — played in creating it.

What’s really hard is trying to afford college and contribute to society while people who don’t appreciate this country get a free pass to getting an education.

My goodness but you jumped to quite a few conclusions and put words in my mouth!
Ratner isn’t talking about the young people in the military, he’s talking about the ivy league grads who studied nothing useful. He is talking about today’s spoiled brats that participated in the worthless “occupy” stunts.
I do realize that a ‘veteran’ is a war vet, yes. For the record, I am a 70 year old female, married to a Navy pilot, sister to several Marines(Vietnam vets) who also served in law enforcement. Do me a favor and do not reply to me about anything ever again.

Well, the whole country has a choice. The Left choice or Right one?

They have been raised to believe only in hedonism.

Sorry? I am more ashamed that our children have come to this. This will end well, but that doesn’t mean the road ahead will be easy. God is infinite, but His patience is not.

For the record, I am a 70 year old female...

Since we are playing the "Blame Generation" Game.

That means YOUR Generation were the ones who brought and supported Abortion and if I am not Mistaken, most the Supreme Court are from that Generation too.

I.E. the people who just brought us gay marriage.

From where I am standing the Previous Generations have thrusted their fair share of Liberalism on this country.

We let The Department of Education raise our kids and then sit here and complain about the results and blame the children instead of their Liberal (and Older0 Parents and Teachers.

And then Ignore the Millennials who thrown off those teachings and bitch at them "why haven't you done more? Now Pay for my Medicare that you didn't vote for or want to pay!!"

The environmental BS that he’d have to go through because he used (gasp!) motor oil in his products was insane. There’s no way that the average Joe could start a business with the limitations. His on-the side business got him more than a 100% profit per bike. Going legit would mean that he’d have to raise his prices by 120% just to break even.

Your entire post is excellent and very insightful.

Millennials face a different threat from any previous generation. The sum of local, state and federal government regulations and control are vastly greater than any point in our history.

Sadistic bureaucrats at all levels of government harass and destroy businesses and personal lives.

Capitalism is dead in America.

It's sad that most Millennials have been brainwashed to support those (the evil left) that have created the very conditions that are destroying their future.

“And the ‘pull up your bootstraps’ thing works great... until the government gives you a fine or ticket for owning boots.”

I never heard this one before. I like it.

The boomers’ national anthem is John Lennon’s “Imagine.” Totally bent in nature’s design. Living for today is what most boomers did.

“They are faced with a slow economy, high unemployment.....”

Woah, woah, woah. How can this be true? Obama and the rest of his admin (along with the sea of liberal drones) tout the 5.3% Unemployment rate and claim to have fixed the economy during the last few Recovery Summers
