The fried-chicken wars: Inside KFC’s weird new fight to dethrone Chick-fil-A
The Washington Post's Wonkblog ^ | May 25, 2015 | Drew Harwell

These are dark days for KFC's once-dominant chicken empire. After five years of crumbling sales, the extra crispy mega-chain, which in 2012 lost its throne as America's top chicken seller to Chick-fil-A, now makes less money than eateries half its size, like Applebee's and Panera Bread.

Now, 75 years after "Colonel" Harland Sanders first served his original recipe at a six-seat dining table in rural Kentucky, the chain is betting $185 million on a massive, bizarre turnaround campaign in hopes of winning a seat again at the fast-food table.

The chain is blasting out TV ads, offering new Southern-style grub and remodeling some of its 4,300 stores with humanized touches, like boards they say will name the regional farm where their chickens came from.

Perhaps KFC's biggest gamble: Reviving the long-dead visage of Colonel Sanders himself, "the brand’s greatest asset," with a handful of increasingly odd "web, broadcast, social media and in-store experiences."(continued)

To the best of my knowledge, KfC still uses Tyson chicken. As long as they do that I won’t eat it. Only had Chick-Fil-A once, a long time ago. It was dry and unappetizing. Could be better now but we don’t have any where I live. I WANT Popeye’s, but it’s been more than five years now since I’ve had that. And I don’t know what chicken they use. Well, I do like my own.

Foods not the problem. The people working there are the problem. I don’t want gross gangster wannabes with neck tattoos and gold teeth serving me food or even touching my food.

“It is wrong for white people to propagate negative stereotypes and culturally appropriate by eating fried chicken at KFC.”

LOL, you remind me of a radio piece I heard years ago, it HAD to be on NPR, but I have no idea what show. It was all about KFC and how they had modernized the brand after the death of Colonel Sanders, at least I think that was the gist.

I do remember the punch line: in the end Colonel Sanders became a black man!

Chick fil-a wins hands-down. The food is delish and the people who work there are the loveliest you can find.

Honestly, I forgot who it was. Another Freeper told me but it was months ago. Usually I keep a list more important things such as the trolls and pro faggot Freepers which is easier to remember.

>>Well, Darrell Hammond is funny. But not funny enough to have me stop eating at Chick-Fil-A.<<

I don’t think he is funny and his smirky Colonel Sanders is irritating.

KFC varies from awful to fairly good but have not had really good for maybe 30 years or longer.

I go back every six months hoping that it will taste as good as it did when I was a kid (40 years ago). It never does. When did the quality change? It doesn't seem like the old recipe.

Only once have I eaten at Chick-fil-a, and while the food was good the serving was very, very skimpy. I’m a light eater, but I was still hungry after my lunch. But I will say at least the food was edible, unlike so many fast food places.

I agree that Chick-fil-a serves a nice lunch, it's not supposed to be heavy. You can wait until dinner time for a bigger meal that fills you up.

We are remodeling the house after 28 years, and find it convenient to eat out more during the process. Both of us (Mrs. RQSR, and myself) are culinary hobbyists, as well professionally trained cooks who actually enjoy cooking, along with cleaning up the mess. I cooked for Denny’s when I was sixteen until age eighteen. I learned to cook at a young age, or I didn’t eat. Point being we don’t eat out unless invited by friends, or relatives, or we are remodeling, and the kitchen is shut down while the contractors are working on it.

For the first time in over twenty years I went to a KFC, and chose the three piece meal. Total cost for two of those was over $21.00. I was shocked, but I must admit the dinner was very delicious.

I won’t ever go back as long as one of the cheapest products on the market costs more than double a FarmerBoys Burger.

Zaxby’s is pretty good too, if you just want a chicken sandwich.

Dear KFC. Your problem is price. Every other chicken eaterie I know is less expensive...popeyes, famous recipe, bojangles,...even BDubs

“Over the next few years, KFC will redo its packaging, uniforms and dining decor”

Yeah, that’ll make the food taste better for sure!

“none of KFC’s rebranding promises touch on a shift toward healthier cuisine”

Or make it taste better. Beyond the fact that their chicken is coated in wheat and grease, the salt content of the batter is so off the charts, I find it completely inedible.

That’s why I say it is impossible to satirize liberals anymore. No matter how fruit loops a thing you come up with, they are already serious about it, said it, did it or made a law about it.

We cannot coexist as one country with these liberal lifeforms. They aren’t even worth calling people.
