Just a comment re the phrasing of news reporting and comments about this crime. Many have pointed out that it happened “more than a decade ago” as does a news report.
There’s something different about this kind of sexual crime - it’s not something people grow out of. Here I am using “people” to mean “perpetrator.” Stealing or forging while 14 years of age, “over 10 years ago” and realizing the error of your ways means something different than the same age of perpetrator and the same lapse in years when it refers to molesting children (i.e., he was 14 when he molested a 4 year old). This behavior is, sadly, a marker for perversion that psychologists can’t cure. Note there’s no indication that he ever received therapy but even if he had, this kind of perversion isn’t curable. Saying he’s sorry is a start but the elephant in the room is that he’s still a damaged person able to damage others.
I disagree.
Adolescent boys and girls are working with brains that are pruning and their judgment is poor. They are also sexually unhinged at times. And these people do grow up to be fine people once the brain gets into shape and the hormones calm down.
