Why Freddie Gray Never Had a Chance: Lead Poisoning Is Killing Inner-City Baltimore
The Daily Beast ^ | May 5, 2015 | Michael Tomasky

One answer: lead poisoning. Yes, seriously. It produces social dysfunction, except the kind among members of Congress who won’t fight it.

Whenever something like the death of Freddie Gray happens, we usually get around, by the third or fourth day, to the broader poverty discussion. This debate usually boils down to the Great Society programs. Liberals say they worked, and what we need are more of them. Conservatives say they failed and the real answer is to found in a sterner moral code.

Between the two, I unsurprisingly endorse the liberal view above (although I don’t think the conservatives have been 100 percent wrong, more on which later). But there’s a more constructive way to talk about poverty than to fight over 50-year-old programs; it’s to use a tragedy like this not just to defend old policies but to promote new ways of understanding poverty and the anti-social behavior that helps keep so many people trapped in it. And Gray’s sad case is a prime example....

OK then. Declare all of Baltimore an imminent threat to public health and bulldoze it to the ground. Treat it like Love Canal.

Unremediated lead paint *is* a serious problem for the poor. The trouble is that the government solution — forcing landlords to clean it up by government mandate — has the downside of causing rental housing stock to dry up (at least for poor families with kids) and causing genuine homelessness for poor families.

Back in the 1980’s when the media was on their “homelessness in America” kick purporting that it was Reagan’s fault, the cities with the highest homelessness rates all had rent control, and all had the main component of the homeless formed by deinstitutionalized mental patients, except one — Worcester, MA — where the problem was lead paint and government mandates for dealing with it, and most of the homeless were families with small children.

The real solution is to teach people to clean up paint chips. My generation all grew up in houses with lead paint on the walls, but by keeping a clean house our parents kept us from getting poisoned.

ok, now we know.

here was me thinking that substance problem in the inner cities was the drinking, or the heroin or the cocaine, or the crack, or the meth, or the oxycotin, or the inhalants, or the ketamine, or the stimulants, or the tranquilizers, or the opiates, or the PCP, or the hallucinogens... and it was actually leaded gasoline all along !

All races of people in baltimore are subject to lead, equally. The water ipes all over that city have lead in them. All old cities with old water piping have lead in them.

Ha...maybe to celebrate the gentrification of some areas of Baltimore they took to drinking low cost wine......and resulting in arsenic poisoning.

The difference is that those pipes are metallic lead which isn’t readily absorbed by the human body. Lead used in paint back in those days was composed of lead oxides which are readily absorbed by the human body.

That bit of information in no way means that I believe that the behavior of inner city ferals is caused by leaded paint.

So that was why Marilyn Mosby ordered the arrest of a school lunch lady and a plumber.

FWIW, leaded gasoline was probably the least of the sources of lead exposure.

Just from an empirical investigation into the combustion products of leaded gasoline, one can observe the following:

Also, the decline in average childhood blood-lead levels was probably also due to the lead paint ban, and improvements to building codes that otherwise prohibited or required the removal of existing lead pipe, &c.

Besides, the overarching reason for the end of leaded gasoline was the introduction of the dry-process exhaust catalyst, which would become useless if leaded gasoline was used. Any supposed health improvements were just a side effect.

I could cite an article from a rather eccentric magazine here, but it might make me look a tad crazed.

Well, that's it for now, but it is a somewhat reasonable response to the enviro-nazis on the causes of lead poisoning...

What kills ghettos is moral relativism.

Without a strong sense of right and wrong (Judeo/Christian-based objective morality for example), there is no civilization or society or even work. There is only chaos.

This is what liberalism ultimately produces...chaos.

> “Now certainly he had other problems—he was born prematurely to a mother who may have been using heroin while pregnant, and he spent the first few months of his life in a hospital. But even at that young age, he was tested for lead, and the tests found unusually high levels in his blood.”

How did he eat lead paint in the womb?

Actually, they are talking about lead paint. That is why they had a lawsuit against their landlord.

There were 64 duplex units built for military housing back in the early 40’s a few miles from where I work. Most of the people who lived there worked for the Army munitions factory and some were stationed at the military trianing camp in our area.

The paint in these units contained lead. Families grew up there and didn’t become criminals and drug addicts. I’m tired of all the excuses that liberals come up with for destructive behavior that has been enabled by liberal social programs. Get Real People!
