What kind of coffee maker do you use?
one man's opinion...

Posted on 04/14/2015 10:23:50 AM PDT by ken5050

So this morning, while rinsing out the carafe of my Black & Decker coffee maker, I accidentally banged it against the side of the sink, cracking it. Frustrating, but no big deal. Go to WalMart.com..find out I can buy a replacement for $9.87. But then I noticed that I can buy a whole new machine..INCLUDING carafe..for $17.88. Yup..digital, programmable, auto-brew..with a two hour automatic shut-off. Which got me thinking....

But NOT about B&D's pricing and marketing strategy..or planned obsolescence, but rather since my machine is almost FOUR years old..it pretty much makes sense to buy a new one.

I'm NOT a coffee fanatic..I drink two cups each morning....I haven't been in a Starbucks since 2007, and my machine makes great coffee. I do buy whole beans, and grind them fresh each morning, ( I like the sound of the grinder) and it makes a great cup of coffee.

So, being conservative...we tend to stay with what we know, and what works, I was about to go pick up a new B&D this afternoon, but I thought I'd find out what others here use, like, and why.

No way I'll get one of those single serving thingees. And I can't stand a French press.

It's surprising the wide price range, and lots of other features... for machines that basically do the same simple task.

I'm sure I'll get a wide range of comments/suggestions/advice..but hopefully some will speak to the question of the pros and cons of the Black & Decker, Mr. Coffee, Melitta, Farberware, and Hamilton Beach unit..all of which are in the same $20-30 price range.

Thanks in advance......

I use an urn style percolator that I bought at a garage sale more than 20 years ago. Offhand I couldn’t tell you what brand it is without walking my butt out to the kitchen.

Get yourself another 30 buck coffee maker. The fewer doo-dads, the better.

Plain old generic drip maker for me. Forget the brand. Ham Beach?

When I'm feeling sporty on a weekend I'll use my French press.

It’s time for the percolator. It’s time for the percolator.

I like the very basic Mr. Coffee which is a $16-17 affair, with zero add’l features. If you get all those features in the B&D for ~~~$20, I don’t see any big reason why not. Yes, I have to remember to shut it off if I leave while it’s on. It’s not that important to me to have it automatically turn on at a specific time each day. Load it up, push the button, go do morning washup, and the coffee is ready in < 5 minutes.

I nuke a Pyrex glass of water and pour it onto the grounds of Sumatra coffee that is in a cone with filter. Yum.

I like my coffee strong, and lots of it. When in Portugal, I walked into Lisbon's #1 restaurant supply company. Here's what they recommended, and man, is it ever the best:

Two good sized cups of not-quite-espresso grade coffee. It's a great maker of industrial strength. I've had it for about 5 years with exactly 0 faults. I expect it will last another 30 years. Never put it in the dishwasher.

It’s nice to have one that you can program to begin making the coffee for a certain time in the morning; that way you set it all up the night before, and coffee’s ready when you stumble out bleary-eyed. We had one of those for a long time.

We’re in sort of the same position - we were using a Farberware electric percolator for years, until it finally died recently; I like the sound of perking coffee, and the coffee seems ‘richer’; but it’s a lot messier than a drip coffee maker to clean up. We bought a cheap Mr. Coffee to use until we researched a better one, but haven’t gotten around to choosing yet...
